Late Late's 50th anniversary special is most watched show this year

On average over one million tuned into the special programme last Friday, RTÉ said.

THE LATE LATE Show’s 50th anniversary special last broadcast Friday night was the most watched show so far this year, RTÉ has said.

The State broadcaster said that on average over one million people – a 69 per cent audience share – tuned in to watch the programme over the course of its two-and-half-hour duration.

This was well above the previously most watched show this year to date, Mrs Brown’s Boys, which had an average viewership figure of 846,000 or a 46.3 per cent share.

RTÉ also said that the programme reached nearly 1.6 million people which represents the number of people who tuned into the programme for 60 seconds or more at some point during its airing.

The special anniversary show saw current host Ryan Tubridy interview former hosts Gay Byrne and Pat Kenny.

Other celebrities who appeared included comedian Tommy Tiernan, U2 frontman Bono and actor Liam Neeson. There were also musical performances from Sineád O’Connor and Imelda May among others.

“I’m absolutely delighted with the figures and want to thank everyone who worked tirelessly behind the scenes putting the show together,” Tubridy said in a statement.
