Large jobs fair announced for May

Jobs at home and abroad will be on offer at the Jobs Expo 2012 at Dublin’s RDS in May.

A LARGE EMPLOYMENT and recruitment fair taking place in May will offer those seeking work both at home and abroad opportunities, as well as giving advice to those hoping to set up their own businesses.

The Jobs Expo 2012 will be held over 12 and 13 May in Dublin’s RDS, and aims to provide job seekers real opportunities to find employment.

There will be a “large number” of job opportunities offered and access to the fair is free of charge.

Learning Ireland, the organisers of the fair, say examples of the sorts of jobs of offer will be:

  • Engineering company GxP Systems which currently has 21 job openings, for engineering positions in Ireland, the US, and Mexico
  • Cork based Software company IFDS Percana
  • Australian company Tom Browne Drilling

The Jobs Expo 2012 will “provide the information needed” for those hoping to work in Ireland, abroad, climb the employment ladder or start their own business.

There will be three specialised ‘villages’ at the fair; engineering, health and professional.

Can’t help but be cynical after hearing that 1,500 people applied for 85 posts at a cinema in Tallaght recently. What jobs?

How about some jobs for graduates. There was none in that last expo but they said they would take my CV, still haven’t heard a would back from one. I’m in a serious predicament here because all the companies abroad I was speaking to won’t take on sparks that haven’t been working within the last couple of years and won’t take on graduates. I feel like I’ve just wasted the last three years of my life!

Just get the work and travel visa, have a decent plan, try to earmark targets before you move, then approach them once you have your work travel visa in Canada or Australia (as you most certainly will find work, once you make a serious effort (and once you avoid excessive socialising). If you are any good, hardworking, punctual and pleasant you will probably be sponsored after your 6 months stint.

Just take the initiative and make it happen. He who dares wins. Nobody is going to walk up to you and give you and just offer you a job in a foreign country.

Nothing in life is a waste of time .How many of the companies you gave your cv to,HAVE you called???
I often used to call a company after emailing my cv to ensure they got it. Always gave them about two working days then called and they usually would then go through your cv there and then with you like a mini phone interview . Great chance to build a bit of rapport by inserting some light humour.

Have you ever considered doing some voluntary or free work. Even for 6 weeks over the summer so as to get a reference. That reference could make all the difference between gaining employment and staying unemployed. No doubt there are people here who object to working for free but it all depends. You need to decide is 6 weeks free work really that bad if at the end you finally have a step to take up he ladder???

    Christ Sean,

Are you willing to make any effort? Why can’t you go, what exaclt is stopping you may I ask? Formulate a plan, get some money together, grab a VISA (easily done, esp to Australia anyways) put the head down and appy like crazy for jobs once you get there. Hit Perth.

    Sean

Padraig is right, plenty of work in Oz, I live in Melbourne maybe not as plentiful here or Sydney head to the mining centres like Mt Isa in Qld or head west or Northern Territory – unemployment rate in WA is 2%. Every second person in Perth are either Irish or English. Good luck to you.

@John: I’ve tried that when I can but to tell you the truth I would be putting €20 credit into my phone every week which I can’t afford.

@pádraic: Make any effort? I spent four years doing an apprenticeship, three years getting a BSc, I go to every expo and apply to grad program I see. There’s one job I’ve seen on jobbridge that’s in my line of work and I’m applying for that now. I’ve already done my working visa for oz so I can’t get back in there for the reasons I laid out in my first comment. I can’t just up and leave to go wandering because I pay for an apartment and to get a few grand together isn’t as easy as you make out and the fact I’m still in college.

Did I read correctly that your in college. Well then Sean don’t be so hard on yourself. Your upskilling and future employers will see that and your efforts will be rewarded.

Employers now when hiring are looking at those that during their period of employment were will to be active either by studying, volunteering or taking up employment in a field they may not generally have been employed in ie. Retail or Bar work. That’s not to belittle those jobs but that’s the reality. I have a friend in recruitment and that’s what she feels helps people get back into the area they are qualified in.

@ Sean, If you’re in college then just keep the auld head down then, but start looking at places you can grab a via to go emigrate. Sort out the next round of Canadian visa applications, and make sure you get one. Assuming you have not used that one up too.

So you are paying a mortgage on an apartment then? Try to let it, assuming that its somewhere where there is demand, and then get sombody to mange it for you when you leave.

Start hiving away cash now, so that you will have a decent little lump saved by the time you move.

Best of luck. Us Irish are hard workers and do really well when we apply ourselves, me and all of my pals have anyways, and those that I see around us. I am sure you are no different! Just remember that you are moving to set up a new life, not to go on the lash in the sun! I am sure you won’t fall into that trap though.

If you are paying internet you can use Skype and other online cheap phone providers to ring anywhere in the world. A tenner will go much further than mobile credit of same amount.

Also call in person to places, face to face contact is very effective. Use LinkedIn, Twitter and even Facebook to network and make contacts. As others have said a stint working for free will give you some much needed experience.

    Sean
I feel your pain, my son went to the working abroad expo…total waste of time and money, full of agencies, and only one exhibitor actually took his cv, despite him doing his ‘homework’ beforehand. He is qualified mechanical engineer (TCD), was working for eighteen months after graduating, but let go, he nearly used up all the space on his gmail sending application, and phone credit following them up. The truth of the matter is there are NO jobs in this country. He has since gone to UK to a job.

Best of luck Sean, the search would make even the most optimistic person downhearted.

To Sean and any other’s looking to find information about visa’s.

I recently started a blog called emigratesafe to help people find the info they need to emigrate to any country.

I do have connections in Australia so if any one wants to send on their CV’s to my gmail at timothyoshea1@gmail.com.

I can’t promise anything but I will do my best to get a you a job before you go.

Just tell me where you want to go and what work you would be willing to do, and if you have a visa already, and like I said above I will do my best for you.

Just contact the diplomatic representation of the country you’re going to (e.g. embassy or consulate).

They’ll get you all the info you need regarding visas and so on.
