THE INCOMING MANAGING Director of News and Current Affairs at RTÉ used Twitter to respond to a story about staff at the broadcaster being lambasted for congratulating him on Twitter.
The current head of the BBC News Channel, Kevin Bakhurst, was announced as RTÉ’s new head of news and current affairs on Tuesday to much congratulations on Twitter including from many of his new colleagues at the State broadcaster.
Notable among them was presenter Miriam O’Callaghan who tweeted:
Bakhurst has done his best in recent days to respond to almost every tweet congratulating him on his new job which he will take up in September.
However, the Irish Independent reported that chief news editor Ray Burke sent an email to staff on Wednesday morning asking them to rein in their “effusive tweets” to Bakhurst.
Sent the story by ITV’s UK News editor Keir Simmons, Bakhurst responded kindly: “There are great people there – I’m really pleased to be going to work with them”.
