Journey Planner iPhone app released

LAST WEEK, the National Transport Authority launched a new online Journey Planner to help the public plan their trips around Ireland using public transport.

The iPhone app has been released today and is currently available as a free download from iTunes.

The Journey Planner will be integrated with real-time passenger information for all Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann stops, as well as Luas and DART services, in the coming months.

Minister for Public Transport Alan Kelly and the NTA have appealed to users to submit their feedback to the Transport for Ireland service so as to improve the options suggested by the service, including local walkways and recommended shortcuts.

when you want to plan a trip out side of the Dublin area the app crashes with the error “No Public Transport Found” !!

  On a test I did for cork to Wexford it got the local bus right but then told me get the air coach to Dublin and then get another bus to rosslare. nIt’s good but needs work

Hope its not like Dublin bus ….. I’m waiting on 18 for last 20 mins , when it said it was due 15 mins ago ,,,,?

Dublin bus app is good…unfortunately ….Dublin bus does not measure up to the same standard as due busses suddenly vanish just before they arrive from the app screen….maybe coffee breaks more important than schedules or passengers for Dublin bus ?

Why was it developed by a German sounding company. Would there be no ‘native’ companies that could have used the business?

  I have heard that the Bus Eireann web booking system is the same as the Deutsch Bahn railways system in Germany. Perhaps they got an “in”. The Dublin Bus app was developed by Biznet up in Belfast. It is a pity that domestic developers aren’t getting an in on this though I presume that it would have gone out to tender.

  Yeah especially since services like this have existed developed by Irish students for years now.. http://justroutes.com/ is maybe 5 years old and there are a few apps floating around as well..

  Great to see the Germans running the country……and it’s websites! It looks like the website transportforireland.ie is hosted in Germany aswell……do a whois on the transportforireland.ie ip address. if only the buses would work as well as the germans!

Journey Planner seems to come up as being developed by Mentz Datenverarbeitung GmbH in the ANdroid Marketplace. Have been using the Dublin Bus app and find it very handy. I think a lot of people don’t understand that the Dublin Bus system is real time information and not a timetable app. I find it pretty reliable but it did throw up some oddities at the start.

Just downloaded it. Put in my job as destination. 3 different options: 1 walk take bus then Luas then walk: 35mins 2. bus, walk , another bus, walk 40 mins. 3 taxi , 5 mins. I love Dublin.

I selected Pearse Street Train Station. I get all the bus info for buses outside Pearse St, but no info for trains : (

I’ve yet to try this app, but I’ve had really good help from the HitTheRoad app which covers bus/dart/luas in the Dublin area. It seems bloody stupid that Transport for Ireland would bother developing their own app from scratch instead of partnering with the hittheroad.ie guys who have been working on this thing for years with a lot of success. Stupid wasteful culture of our semi-states.

Any idea why this app couldn’t be developed in Ireland? Nice to be sending more money to Germany http://www.mentzdv.de/ made the app. It’s good too.

Tried it for Walkinstown to Ringsend Park; it recommended a 17-minute walk along the quays after the bus. You wouldn’t want to be ould or creaky.
