MSD to shed 90 jobs at Cork plant

The announcement has been met with disappointment today.

PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANY MSD has announced it will be seeking 90 voluntary redundancies from its 455-strong staff at its plant in Brinny, county Cork.

Employees were told about the move in a meeting this afternoon. The lay-offs are a result of demand and less production of its Hepatitis C drug interferon.

Cork South Central TD Micheál Martin said he was “hugely disappointed” about the firm’s decision, adding that the plant has provided much employment across the county since it began operating under Schering Plough over 30 years ago.

A consultation process between staff and union representatives are to begin immediately.

    So Aoife, I’m an insulin dependant diabetic. Will I stop taking my insulin produced by a pharma company and start going to mass?? Will Jesus be able to control my blood sugar??

    While these jobs have more to do with competition from a superior drug rather than generics the reality is that these announcements will become the norm over the next two or three years due to patent expiry and the paucity of newer medicines to replace them. That situation will worsen if the Government is not prepared to reimburse the newer products.

      It’s never nice to see people lose their employment, but let’s face it… these pharma companies are poisoning us and when we work for them, we are part of a negative process!

      Vaccines against polio, smallpox, whooping cough, measles, mumps, etc.

      You lot who come proclaim the benevolence of Pharma companies are either ill-informed or so blinded by the good that you choose to ignore the unforgivable. I will say a prayer for you Sara and you too “boildyeggs”. Maybe Jesus can come to you in the night and deliver you a healthier outlook.
