Ninety jobs lost as chicken plant closes in Cavan

The closure of Co-operative Poultry Products Ltd will also affect local growers in the area, according to Siptu.

WORKERS AT CO-OPERATIVE Poultry Products Ltd were told last night that the company’s Cavan plant was closing its doors.

Simon Coyle of Mazars has been appointed as the liquidator to the company, which trades under the brand name Cootehill Farms.

A total of 90 jobs have been lost at the facility, which was first established in the county in 1949.

Siptu organiser Jim Finnegan said the development will also impact the livelihoods of more than 25 local growers who have now lost their source of income.

“The closure of this long-established co-operative will have a devastating effect on the local community,” he said.

Brief discussions were held yesterday, during which Finnegan said he made clear that the union will be seeking the prompt payment of the workers’ redundancy entitlements.

let it be known.to you all that the vast majority of chicken / chicken related products are brought in from vietnam, thailand and further afield. Enjoy your chicken strippers last night ? today 90 people lost their livelyhoods because you did. Now guess where Cuisine de France get all their chicken nuggets and strippers …..yep ….not here.

Mike, not sure about what they displayed on their retail packaging but I use a lot of their products in the catering industry and they do have the Bord Bia Origin of Ireland sticker on the boxes, all irrelevant now to the people who have been let go I guess, shame,they produced a quality product.

Price of the grain on the market are going true the roof , catering is using lots of chicken from abroad the fresh from Nederland and uk , frozen like strips and wings from Vietnam and Thailand , also today a whole chicken in aldi was 2€95 . What do you people expect ? What would a breeder get out of 2€95 ???
By the way pork industry is going the same way !

I don’t believe they were registered or displaying the Love Irish Food, or any other logo Guaranteeing they were using 100% Irish chicken. That was either very bad management or they weren’t sourcing their chicken from Ireland.

That’s the beginning – that program from Philip Bouchier Hayes predicted that a few months ago http://www.rte.ie/tv/programmes/whats_ireland_eating.html. You can go into Tesco yourself and see the prices yourself – 15,00 for 2 organic Irish chicken fillets and 4 something for 400g worth of “everyday chicken”…which probably comes from Thailand and is processed in some anonymous processing plant…
