A COMPANY SPECIALISING in producing equipment to treat tinnitus has announced 50 new jobs in Dublin.
And in a separate announce today, a Cork-based US marine energy company has announced 80 jobs.
The Dublin jobs will be based at NovaUCD and will come on stream over the next five years.
The company, Neuromod Devices, was last night named the Emerging Merical Company of the Year at the Medical Industry Excellent Awards.
The company received secured regulatory approval last month for a device named Mutebutton.
The device is used to treat tinnitus through a combination of audio and lingual stimulation, and the company said two studies have shown it can reduce the symptoms of the condition.
Neuromod Devices was founded four years ago, and is now looking to expand into international markets.
In Cork harbour, US ocean energy company, Resolute Marine Limited, is looking to expand over the next five years with 80 new jobs as it establishes it European headquarters.
The company is developing a wave-powered desalination system.
Renewable energy financial consultancy firm Exceedence Ltd and salvage company Resolve Marine announced five and six jobs respectively.
“It is clear that the decision to establish a dedicated marine cluster at Cork Harbour is encouraging private sector investment and leading to the creation of a significant number of high quality jobs,” Minister Simon Coveney said.
I have always been convinced that the unique collaborative nature of IMERC would create the right momentum for such investment and ensure that this campus becomes a major player in the international marine sector.

I sit here reading this article in a nice quiet room.. The only noise being the ringing in my ears, the wonderful Tinnitus.
Would be interested to try their product. Tried to get one called “GetDubs” and was kinda ironic that a Dub couldn’t get a set from Santa as they only ship in the US. Well.. The ringing goes on.

Suffered from severe tinnitus for about two years, had all kinds of tests done on my hearing and ears, and even an MRI but they eventually told me id just have to put up with it. I could hardly sleep with the noise some nights.
Then one day it just stopped by itself and I haven’t had it in about 5 years. I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.

There are different types of tinnitus with different causes. What types of tinnitus does this treat? And what do they mean by “treat”? Existing “treatments” just play a sound designed to mask the tinnitus. They’re pointless.
There are some interesting strides into tinnitus treatment. The pointless one you speak of concerns tonal tinnitus, which aims to see if the damaged hair cells can be reset by using phase cancellation to stop the physical vibration which creates the sound people hear. This is where the individuals tinnitus tone is established (very hard job) and then played via a hearing aid type device. There have been promising results where someones tinnitus goes away for a period of time.
Other treatments which are similar aim to mask the sound. There are also psychological treatments which aim to help people take the focus off the sound. There are also diet related treatments where researchers see if specific foods make it better or worse. Coffee certainly can make it worse. Zinc calmed it down it others.
It may take a wee bit of scientific research to confirm your “pointless” conclusion and with a cure a long way off, these new jobs signify some investment in the condition, which is great!
No, the one I was talking about is a device that makes sounds designed to mask the tinnitus. It is pointless because the sound it makes is just as annoying as the tinnitus. it is not designed to reduce the tinnitus in any way, just mask it while you are wearing the device.
There was a project in Sligo that uses tones to treat short-term tinnitus caused by loud noise.
I have severe tinnitus accompanied by deafness. About a third of sufferers of tinnitus are in the same group as me. From this article, I have no idea if this treatment is designed for us.
I get a series of high frequency solid tones. I once tried to figure out my specific frequency using an app that makes the tone sound. But when I heard that tone, I realised that my tinnitus was made up of multiple simultaneous tones at slightly different frequencies. At lest 2, maybe more. All high-pitched, but still different frequencies.
Others experience sounds like an old phone ringing, clicking sounds etc. For all we know these are all different conditions with different causes.
I am in the same boat as you regarding having Tinnitus, but whether it annoys the person more is down to the individual for that individual treatment. This is the problem with trying to deal with something which we do not have a massive amount of understanding about and is why it is good to see investment into the condition and its many current avenues for treatment. Cures are totally different.
The latter part of your reply highlights the problems faced in developing a treatment. Your group of tones are personal to you, mine are personal to me and another could have a single tone. Then you have the group who don’t have tones, but have all manner of other sounds. Each credible treatment, including the masking, works on people, but it is a much more complex problem to get it to work for everyone.
So with that all said and done, there are going to be many sufferers who wont directly benefit from this companies treatment but the overall direction of investment and research will lead to understanding and a wider umbrella of helpful treatments.
I was always told that nothing can be done about it.
I’m going to stop drinking coffee now after reading this and try zinc tablets to see if it helps.

Separate articles or at least a joint headline appropriate for these announcements I think.
The 80 Cork ones are coming online over the next half-decade, so rest assured they’ll be re-announced several times by various ministers and PR departments before you get their benefit.
