A NEW SURVEY has shown that 66 per cent of Irish employees admit to shopping while at work with 41 per cent admitting to sending personal emails from company accounts.
The research was conducted by Peninsula Ireland with 552 employees. Commenting on the results today, managing director Alan Price said; “Employees are paid to work, not shop online. Persistent offenders need to be disciplined, spending time on the internet costs employers time and money.”
He said it is difficult for companies to block websites as they may need to be used for work purposes.
Price said that companies should remind employees that their emails can be monitored at any point and that anything they send can be seen again.
“If you suspect that employees may be making purchases in work or sending personal emails then look into putting in a firewall to prevent common websites from being accessible, and perhaps only give full internet access to those who really need it,” he added.
