A NEW SURVEY has shown that 66 per cent of Irish employees admit to shopping while at work with 41 per cent admitting to sending personal emails from company accounts.
The research was conducted by Peninsula Ireland with 552 employees. Commenting on the results today, managing director Alan Price said; “Employees are paid to work, not shop online. Persistent offenders need to be disciplined, spending time on the internet costs employers time and money.”
He said it is difficult for companies to block websites as they may need to be used for work purposes.
Price said that companies should remind employees that their emails can be monitored at any point and that anything they send can be seen again.
“If you suspect that employees may be making purchases in work or sending personal emails then look into putting in a firewall to prevent common websites from being accessible, and perhaps only give full internet access to those who really need it,” he added.

Have employers been surveyed for the amount of unpaid overtime and crap their employees put up with at work. Most people go to work to bed to work. No option but to shop online
As long as the job is done and the employer is making his greasy profits then who cares :)

The next time management or a customer call outside of work hours on any of the 3 work phones I have or stop by during lunch to ask me something… I’m going to accuse them of thieving my personal time and say that might as well come into my house and help themselves to my belongings

Work has to be balanced to get the most from employees.
There are always some who totally abuse any perk and that can’t be condoned but sometimes turning a blind eye can be to a companies benefit increasing moral and productivity over all.
Yes Amazon just eats into those poor employer’s data usage with its complex web design and graphics. Excuse me while I go play my tiny violin for them which I bought online while working

This is tantamount to theft from one’ s employers and your idea that the boss is a hill joy simply indicates a very basic misunderstanding on your part ( which would be at the sub intelligent levels ) or you condone theft from employers by employees. Really Richard? What if its done during lunch hour etc? Between 3-5 days I’d have a desk lunch and might spent a few mins shopping. My boss is ok with it as I am with him contacting me out of hours etc for any issues, basically this is a half arsed study by the guy who’s obviously trying to flog monitoring software etc to businesses.

John- Are you saying smokers don’t online shop? Where would they get the time after taking 10 smoke breaks and trying to squeeze in some work!

This needs to be balanced. An employee with a purchase on their mind could be considered as being distracted and therefore not being completely focused on the task in hand. As an employer. I’d be happier to put up with an employee having few short sessions online to get it out of their system and then focus on the job at hand. As has been said earlier I certainly wouldn’t condone an abuse of this, but what the hell as long as the job is ultimately being done.
I once worked in a place where the MD used to scan the phone bill personally each month and check every call. Always thought that was a great use of his time (<- sarcasm), of course the place is out of business now.

Shop online at Tescos. Have it delivered to your car at work in the hour before you knock off on a Friday. Weekly shopping done. Enjoy the weekend.
