A REPORT BY Oracle Capital Group shows that Ireland is the seventh most entrepreneurial country in the world, and the top in Europe.
India came top in the survey of 33 major industrial nations, with the UK some distance behind Ireland in 28th position.
The report measures opinions, attitudes, experiences and acitivities that contribute to entrepreneurial activity.
Ireland and India are joined in the top ten by Turkey, the US, Brazil, China, Iceland, Russia, Estonia and Austria.

By way of contrast, the bottom ten countries feature several European industrial powerhouses, including Germany, France and the UK. Japan comes dead last, with Hungary, Italy, Portugal and Spain also in the bottom ten.
Ireland’s top scores came in metrics measure the image of entrepreneurs, or how well they are received, with high scores for prior experience and for early stage business activity.
The chairman of Oracle, which provides services to family funds and high net worth individuals, said that the results are a strong indicator of ongoing market development in different regions of the world.
Martin Graham pointed out that many emerging economies like Brazil and Turkey had scored well, alongside more mature economies like Ireland.
He said: “The report is a valuable insight into the significance of entrepreneurial contribution to the growth of national economies and underscores the importance of businesses receiving support at government levels.”

SF supporters get really annoyed whenever a bit of good news is brought to the fore. They’d rather see the country turn to sh*t, just so they can see their favorite politicians get into power. Sickening.
This unfortunately was true about the IRA in the North during the troubles, whether or not it’s true today. The IRA in Derry for instance actively ‘discouraged’ businesses from providing employment in the Bogside area in order to prevent locals from having any hope for the future.
Interesting tactic from evil geniuses, but quite disgraceful.
Cromwell discouraged employment by locking whole populations in churches, setting them ablaze and putting to the sword those who fled. Quite disgraceful.
Give some people credit. The country crashed and these entrepreneurs are taking the bull by the horns and making things work for them. It’s not a matter of possible failure, it’s a case of them taking control of their own future. Fair play to them. It shows we aren’t a nation of pushovers. Instead of protesting, they’re building their own destinies.
I have to say I have the utmost respect for someone who starts and builds their own business. Irish people certainly are among the most entrepreneurial in the world.
Yea, they should focus on the doom and gloom, just so they can please the miserable yolks that frequent The Journal. Also love the way you overlooked the fact that this was report carried out by a foreign company.
Jasus Jeremy, give up on the SF bashing. They are a shower yes, but at this point, considering the state of the nation, they couldn’t possibly be any worse than FF, FG, Labour or any combination thereof.
Jeremy is peddling what is called nervous self preservation and is probably pad to do so….it may be a bit too late…the shinners have learned from FG and Labour….promise the sun moon and stars and your in…they have gatecrashed the FF FG party…only time will tell if they are here to stay
Jobbridge is a good idea that’s been badly implemented/regulated. It should be confined to early startups, or companies below a certain turnover threshold. It gives workers the experience of some time on the job, while easing pressure on those companies that need that little bit of extra help in certain areas to push on, but genuinely can’t afford to pay a wage.
I applied for a business loan to expand our business into other markets. Bank told us they could process an unsecured bank loan within 48 hours.
However once we got into it, it’s unsecured if you don’t count a personnel guarantee by the directors.
I offered to secure the loan against assets in the business but that is not acceptable to bank.
Business’s owners have to go out on a lot of cliff edges to get there business off the ground. Banks asking them to bring there family & family home out as well!
Personnel guarantees should be outlawed!
Party Politics had its time but I think we need to move on a bit folks,if for no other reason that I cannot stand this childish “my party is better than your party” jibber jabber.
Everyone is entitled to their beliefs, values and wishes; and all are equally valid wether you like them or not. Sensible educated debate will achieve far more than petty insults, whatifery & whataboutery
Wait until we have a tax harmonisation in the EU. We will be rightly fooked , even home based entrepreneurs will set up elsewhere , simply because of the wages they will have to pay here.
Dunno – Training, relocation, and Ireland is pretty good education-wise in the technology sector. And closest to the US as regards time difference. Even IF there’s a tax harmonisation in the EU, I’m kind of thinking it won’t be quite the doomsday scenario everyone’s painting it to be. But what would I know?
”The chairman of Oracle, which provides services to family funds and high net worth individuals”
- Whats a high net worth individual ??- Billionaire ??
And I would not be taking seriously a survey that puts India first.
From John Pilger jan 2014 ”
”When the national grid collapsed in 2012, leaving 700 million people powerless, almost half had so little electricity, they “barely noticed”, wrote one observer. On my last two visits, the front pages boasted that India had “gatecrashed the super-exclusive ICBM (intercontinental ballistic missile) club” and launched its “largest ever” aircraft carrier and sent a rocket to Mars: the latter lauded by the government as “a historic moment for all of us to cheer”.
The cheering was inaudible in the rows of tarpaper shacks you see as you land at Mumbai international airport and in myriad villages denied basic technology, such as light and safe water. Here, land is life and the enemy is a rampant “free market”. Foreign multinationals’ dominance of food grains, genetically modified seed, fertilisers and pesticides has sucked small farmers into a ruthless global market and led to debt and destitution. More than 250,000 farmers have killed themselves since the mid-1990s – a figure that may be a fraction of the truth as local authorities wilfully misreport “accidental” deaths. ”
You will note that Iceland, which burned their bondholders and jailed government and banking officials, fared better than Ireland.
Turkey, India, China all beat Ireland. All famous as a “worker’s paradise”.
So apparently, to be an “entrepreneurial” star, you have to pay your workers shite, have an oppressive government or both.
