Ireland has been through ‘a hurricane’ – Kenny speaks at World Economic Forum

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Enda Kenny stressed the need for job creation across Europe in order to tackle the economic crisis.

THE TAOISEACH ENDA Kenny today said that Ireland has been “though a hurricane” in its struggle to deal with the European debt crisis.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Kenny shared a panel with the heads of state of several other European countries: Italy’s Mario Monti, Denmark’s Helle Thorning-Schmidt and the Netherlands’ Mark Rutte.

The annual meeting of the World Economic Forum sees world leaders and influential businesspeople meet to network and discuss issues affecting the global economy. The theme of this year’s meeting is ‘Resilient Dynamism’.

‘It’s been a hurricane’

Editor of the Financial Times Lionel Barber, who was chairing the panel, asked Kenny how Ireland had weathered the economic crisis of the past number of years.

“It’s been a hurricane,” Kenny said, explaining that – at the time his government came to power – Ireland had lost 250,000 jobs in the private sector, was facing the task of clearing up toxic banks, and dealing with an international reputation that was “in shreds”.

In contrast to that situation, Kenny pointed out that Ireland now had more than 1,000 multinational corporations driving exports. “When you have a strategy, a plan, and you follow it – you see results,” he said.

However, he also noted that the people of Ireland had faced some serious challenges in the past number of years.

“The mechanisms and tools available [to Ireland] now were not available when the crisis first it,” he said. “When it did, we had to borrow €64 billion – 40 per cent of GDP.”

“It has been a crushing burden on the people – and their patience has been long,” he added.

Ireland is ‘not a tax haven’

On this issue of tax, Kenny said that Ireland’s stance on its corporation tax rate of 12 per cent was “very transparent and clear” and that Ireland was not a “tax haven”. He added that it would not be changed.

Kenny was also asked about yesterday’s announcement by the British Prime Minister David Cameron, in which he promised the nation would vote on the issue of EU membership by 2017. Noting that Ireland’s recent referendum on the Fiscal Stability Treaty had been approved by a margin of 60 – 40 per cent, Barber asked if Kenny had any advice to Cameron on “how to win a referendum”.

Kenny said Ireland’s relationship with European Union stretched back for over 40 years, the people of Ireland had a keen understanding of the Union and how it operates. “I don’t speak for the British government, but the single union will remain stronger if UK remains a part of it,” he said.

“Whatever happens, I want  to see Britain remain central to the EU and to its future.”

Strong employment strategy needed

Similarly, when asked what advice he would give to the US Congress, he said Ireland had made “very painful decisions” – including increasing pension ages, reducing public pay, and changing structures – in order to deal with its own crisis. “The  first thing you need is a plan, a clear strategy and have an objective in mind. What do you want to see over the period of government? What is your strategy to achieve that? We’re not there yet, obviously, we still need European support.”

The Taoiseach also stressed the need for a strong unemployment strategy in Europe, saying “politics is essentially about people”. He noted that 26 million people, including many young people, were currently unemployed across the Union and they needed to see that their efforts to find work “rewarded”.

The Finance Minister Michael Noonan is also scheduled to participate in the event.

      http://www.independent.ie/national-news/courts/three-tds-in-court-to-support-challenge-to-31bn-promissory-note-payment-3364794.html

What are the options open to the Country?. Is it binding? Why does Ireland have to pay for this banks mistakes? Why wasn’t it allowed to fail. Why are Irish people indebted for years for its mistakes. It affects all of us. All of our taxes have increased, basic rights such as food and heating are now unaffordable for many. The sick and venerable have cut backs in Health. The elderly are losing their home carers hours. The government continue to put Europe (Germany)in particular before its People. Surely this is not right. Option one in the jpmckenna needs to be considered http://www.jpmckenna.ie/McKenna-IBRC-Debt-Explained.pdf
Option One: Write off the debt in its entirety
This option involves the complete non-payment of the Promissory notes.
Although this may appear drastic, its impact could be minimal. The only
“loser” in this scenario is the ICB since the Promissory notes are owed solely
to that institution. However, the ICB, like any other Central Bank, but unlike
other institutions that would simply become insolvent if they incurred losses
on this scale, is able to absorb the losses it incurs on the Promissory notes
because it can simply create money. An institution that can create its own
money cannot go broke provided that the money it creates is accepted by
those who use it. Central Bank losses are only a notional concept. Taking this
approach would significantly reduce Ireland’s debt burden and, therefore,
increase the likelihood of rapid economic recoveryHowever, this option is not without its pitfalls. Other Eurozone countries could
seek similar arrangements for their own indebted banks. If this arrangement
was carried out wholesale across the Eurozone it would lead to significant
Euro inflation. Moreover, such an approach would need approval from the
ECB. The ECB could disallow such a move if two thirds of its governing
council deems it to be contrary to the ECB’s objectives. Some may argue that
such a move would be contrary to the ECB’s objectives since it has the
potential to increase inflation, a deep-seated fear in the ECB. It could be
argued, however, that the risk of inflation would be minimal if Ireland was
given sole permission to take this action. Europe-wide political approval
would, in theory, also be required. Obtaining ECB and wider political approval
would not be easy but it is not impossible.

Pots, Pans and Other Solutions (2012)
      http://www.filmsforaction.org/watch/pots_pans_and_other_solutions_2012/
…In Iceland, the first European country to wake up to an economic crash, people became aware that they could and should intervene in society and started demanding more democratic participation.
The payment of bank debts by citizens went to referendum. The government was forced to create a Council to write a new constitution: a citizens’ group – without politicians, lawyers or university professors — who opened the discussion process to everybody and managed to approve by consensus a draft proposal.

In Iceland, many citizens are now organized in associations and have substantial proposals for a society where everyone can participate.

Let’s meet the Icelanders that the media refuse to talk about.

When Joan Bruton cut the respite grant it made me sick to my stomach that a Labour Minister could even contemplate such a thing nevermind introduce the bill. The Taoiseach has a tough agenda at Davos. First he is promoting Ireland as a place to invest with some of the most important Industrialists in the World. The IDA are there with him on a very targeted series of Meetings. Secondly he will have meetings with the European Leaders in terms of our six months Presidency of the EU and that provides him with another opportunity to lobby on our legacy Banking debts and other issues and finally he has the opportunity to repair Ireland image abroad which is critically important.
Would you prefer he spent a few days at home propping up a pint in the Dail Bar or holding clinic meetings in Castlebar.

  • Unbridled capitalism is bad for society

Unbridled capitalism favors the survival of the fittest even if it means pushing other people into destitution and starvation, creating untold suffering for animals and the natural environment, and depleting and destroying the natural resources of our world.

If there was a form of “conscious capitalism” in which care was extended to fellow humans, animals and the natural environment whether animate or inanimate, the question is if could be called capitalism at all?…….
    ………….

    “Conscious Capitalism”
Is a contradiction in terms. It is thus because human consciousness obeys the rule of “as you think so you become”. As a money minded capitalist spends the majority of waking hours in the contemplation of gold, property and currencies, naturally his mind will in the long run crudify to an unconscious entrapment in crude matter, however financially valuable.

“Capitalists argue, “We amass wealth by dint of our intellect and labour. Let others also procure wealth in the same way if they have the intellect or labour. What stops them?” These people do not want to realize that the amount of consumable commodities in the world is limited, but the basic necessities are common to all. If one person rolls in affluence, in most cases others will be deprived of even their minimum requirements. The failure to recognize the needs of others is itself a disease.” P.R.Sarkar, The responsibility of society, 1960

At best it can be said that a constructive sustainable society that spreads the opportunities widely to all its members have to include and protect a free market in the form of a level playing field where people can start their own business either as an individual or as a collective with others. Communism, which Sarkar describes as an extreme form of destructive materialism, did not cater in this way for peoples need to be entrepreneurial and consequently lost its dynamism.

Then there are other industrial and economic spheres where private management and ownership is unfeasable, areas where the prevention of monopolies would be hard and where profit taking would emaciate every other business, areas such as major infrastructure and raw materials. These concerns would have to be controlled by boards answerable to the local electorate, on a no profit no loss basis.

    A new Paradigm
Let’s be very clear: A society controlled by money minded capitalists would not be able to construct a balanced society for the progress of all its members, and neither would the dictatorship of any party. We see proof of this all around in most of the countries of the world today.

The world is ripe for a new paradigm, and although it has to include a healthy portion of level playing field small locally owned companies “capitalism” (for want of a better word), it can’t be capitalism as usual. Written by Peter Jadinge

‘Unbridled capitalism favors the survival of the fittest’
When the banking crisis happened the laws of capitalism were thrown out the window because in a true capitalist market the banks should have been let go to the wall. Capitalism was not applied. We have to ask ourselves why and by whom?.
Because of this Capitalism as we know it is now broken and it looks like it will never be the same again.
