Irish adults carry €78m in cash daily - survey

We also spend quite a bit of time queueing…

IRISH ADULTS carry an average of €23 in cash on a daily basis, according to a new survey by Visa Europe, or €78.2 million in total across the adult population.

Meanwhile, the Irish population spends 11.2 million minutes a day queueing with convenience stores, petrol stations and fast food outlets listed as the top three places for standing in line.

The survey was carried out in April using online surveys of 1,000 adults around Ireland. Visa Europe also polled respondents about their attitude towards ‘contactless technology’ which involves the customer holding a special card over a reader when making a purchase. The transaction time is quicker than using cash or credit cards, according to Visa.

While 45 per cent said that the main benefit would be the quicker speed of transactions, 37 per cent said it would be more convenient than taking cash out from an ATM before making the purchase.

Irish people are among the most prolific users of ATMs; in 2010, the average Irish person went to an ATM 40 times, while the average Dane used one just three times.
