Chinese middle classes hungry for Irish goods

Exporter body predicts growth in Ireland-Asia trade for next 15 years.

IRISH EXPORTS TO China could increase at rates of up to 11 per cent every year to 2030, with large demand for expensive consumer goods driving growth.

Asia Trade Forum chairman Hugh Kelly said that the ICT and life sciences sectors would lead the charge, with food and dairy also contributing to growth.

As middle classes grow, the whole Chinese economy is moving up the value chain. We’re well positioned as the demand for higher tech products increases – we’re not in the low cost space, we’re in the value space.

The Asia Trade Forum will run a series of nationwide seminars on doing business with Asia, as well as business visits to India and Malaysia this year.

Kelly said that he was unconcerned at the prospect of economic slowdown in China and other large Asian economies.

“The economy may or may not be slowing down, but with population growth and modernisation demand is inevitably going to increase.”

He said that Ireland has not always replicated its successful trade with the US around the world, but recent developments such as a $100m co-development fund for exporting start-ups launched by the China Investment Coporation and the National Pension Reserve Fund had the potential to turn that around.

At the launch of the Asia Trade Forum in Iveagh House, Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Joe Costello said the government was in lock-step with the industry’s Asian ambitions.

He said three recently opened trade missions in Hong Kong, Indonesia and Thailand would “substantially increase our footprint in Asia, and will serve to boost trade, tourism, investment and other links with Ireland.”

Malachy, you can get it in Ireland. There is a shop in Dublin on Strand street called Jabula. They are a South African shop that sells South African foods, snacks and sweets.
They also have an online shop and will deliver to your door.

Jabula is no longer in operation. Closed down about 6 month’s ago. However, biltong is alive and well in a few Irish butcheries who are making them for the south African market here in Dublin and in the rest of Ireland. To make your own, just Google it.

    It seemed to be selling.
Although it was mainly sold in tourist shops, so I’m not sure of much of it was actually eaten.

“I have deliberately not called it beef jerky – I think people see that as being unhealthy and processed,” he said.

Doh! That’s because the people seeing it as unhealthy are the WHO, it has ascertained that processed meats are a major source of cancer and jerky/biltong is……a processed/cured meat.
I love the stuff but lets not pretend that subterfuge makes it a healthy option. Like granny used to say, everything in moderation.

    It isn’t jerky.
It’s biltong, as made in South Africa for hundreds of years.

There is quite a difference between the two, from the type of heat used, to the curing process.

Biltong is far, far superior than jerky.

Depending on how you cure biltong, you can have it dry, or actually quite moist and soft.

Once you try it for the first time, you’ll be hooked.

What he does is called “Sliced Biltong” which is only ONE of the varieties of Biltong available and is the most easy and simple to make. Uncle Bok from Longford has been making a variety of Biltong, Chili Bites, Sticks, Droëwors (Dried Sausage) and Boerewors in Ireland for many years now so it is definitely not a new addition to the market. Apart from the high salt content, there is not much actual “processing” going into it so I personally still see it as a very healthy snack which my kids enjoy with us. We even use the Biltong sticks as teething the perfect chew for the babies. http://www.unclebok.com
