iPhone 5
Pics: iPhone 5 likely to be available in Ireland later this month
You should be able to get your hands on Apple’s new device as early as 28 September if you’re living in Ireland. Plus we have more details on the new features…
THE NEW IPHONE is likely to be made available in Ireland on 28 September after the latest version of Apple’s smartphone was launched in California today.
The iPhone 5 was launched by the company today along with a range of new products and software including new iPods, iPod Nanos, updated iTunes and a new version of its iOS (operating system) which will be available to download from 19 September.
The phone will be available for pre-order from Thursday and will ship in nine countries on 21 September including the UK.

It will ship to more countries on the 28 September with it expected that Ireland is among these.
By December of this year, the company said that 100 countries will have the new device which 240 different mobile carriers will be licensed to operate.
Glass and aluminum design, just like the iPhone 4 and 4S.
7.6mm thin, and weighs 112 grams. Apple claims the iPhone 5 is the world’s thinnest smartphone.
The display is slightly taller than the iPhone 4S screen. It has a 1135 X 640 pixel resolution and a 16:9 screen ratio. That ratio will make it better for watching widescreen movies.
Apple’s apps like Mail, Keynote, Garage Band, etc. have been updated to fit the new screen size.
But older third-party apps that haven’t been updated to the new screen size will have black bars on either end. Developers will need to update their apps quickly.
Touch sensors are integrated into the screen, meaning you’ll get more accurate touch response.
Will connect to the fastest wireless networks, including LTE.
Will run on Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon in the U.S. (Sorry, no T-Mobile)
Wi-Fi chip runs at 5 GHz, allowing for faster, more reliable connections to Wi-Fi networks.
New A6 processor, which is twice as fast as the chip in the iPhone 4S. This also means gaming graphics are going to look amazing.
New Game Center called “time shifted” lets you play games against people at different times. For example, if you’re playing a racing game, you can race now, and your friend can compete against your time later.
Better battery life than the iPhone 4S. You get 8 hours of 3G talk time. 8 hours LTE web browsing.
New iSight camera that’s 25% smaller than before. It’s an 8 MP camera, the same number of MP as the iPhone 4S camera. The iPhone 5 camera will work better in low light and takes photos 40% faster than the iPhone 4S. There’s also a panoramic mode.
Camera records 1080p HD video, has face detection, and you can take photos while recording video.
The front-facing FaceTime camera takes 720p HD video.
There’s a noise-canceling earpiece and advanced microphones for better audio calls.
New dock connectors called Lightning. It’s smaller, meaning you’ll need an adapter to use older iPhone accessories.
Comes in black and white.
It will have the same pricing structure as the previous iPhone models: $199, $299, and $399 for the 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB models, respectively.
Pre-orders begin Sept. 14. Ships Sept. 21.
Here are a few pictures from today’s launch involving Apple CEO Tim Cook and senior VP Phil Schiller:

Dont ever get a Samsung. Had one for two months. The worst piece of shite ever made. Dropped calls, crashed, no coverage. 4s got today thank god. Back to normality after the 4 was stolen in June.
For me, I think Samsung are undoubtedly the big winners after today. After all the court dates apple needed something dynamic and innovative and as far as I can tell they”ve fallen massively short. Sure they’ll have massive sales as the die hards will no doubt rush in their droves to buy but I definitely think apples star has fallen. Can’t help but wonder if jobs would have put that phone out knowing the technology was already months behind his competitors..
Biggins. An informed person would know a phone crashing isnt a network problem. Its O2 by the way. And the apple works in all the areas the Samsung wouldnt. Im fanatical about a product that works!! No matter what logo is on it
It’s $199 with a two year contract (small print under the price in the photo). Roughly the same as here when it comes out. The 599 euro you quote is for a non-contract phone – roughly the same as in the US.
For a split second when I read the prices on the engadget liveblog I thought “shit! that’s impressive!”, then it clicked that’s the price on a contract.
@ joseph mcgranaghan, yeah, but who, in their right mind would want to suffer through 2 years with three just to get the phone for free. I’d much rather pay something for the phone and be with a better network! Being mean will always come back to bite you on the as$
The case is only thing that’s better designed than the galaxy S3, and for me that’s pretty much just the glossy finish. Should have went with a matt finish on the GS3.
Big deal! This is more of an upgrade rather than a new phone. Lack of a ‘wallet’, as expected, makes it out of date already compared with what’s already on the market.
As a current iphone user(4) i have an android tablet which i prefer to ios but i was holding out to see what the iphone 5 had to offer before buying an android phone.
Then i see this is what all the hype was about!! Its basicaly the same bleeding phone as the last two iphones,
Magnum or blue steel, its still the same god damn thing.
Realistically – Android is always trying to catch up with Apple … the new iPhone is class and the Samsung Galaxy S3 just doesn’t come near ! haters gonna hate !
I’m a huge android fan but compared to apples stability its miles behind. I have to restart my one x pretty much every day. never did it with the iPhone. think ill be going back to an iPhone. the intergration with other apple products is pretty flawless. the hardware between the likes of the s3 and iphone are pretty much the same so its hard to compare.
Saw this phone a number of weeks back online and thought no way this could be the next “big release”.has apple lost their design flair and innovativeness?this phone coupled with iTunes has paved the way for me to the dark side: S3
epic fail, nothing new or innovative here, galaxy s3 much better, the magic died with Steve jobs, now who’s got the best deal for me to upgrade to new iPhone?
I hate this type of misinformation.
Prices 199, 299, 399…my @ss…
With 2 year contract and in USA.
Yeah, I can sell you 2012 BMW car for 500 euro OK… if you pay me grand a month for next 5 years.
LOL
If the post price let it be RRP of sim-free phone not that bull…
Have all those in western society who would previously have been religious nuts now become the 1.2bn APPostLEs ?? It’s more than just a brand it’s a belief system.
Could this release be called the fifth amendment since that is about the size of the changes?
It’s absolutely ridiculous when people comment on an article stating the fact that they are not bothered by news in the article……… Here’s an idea don’t read it and certainly don’t comment. Some people are interested in reading it …….
Completely not even arsed to look at it on the interwebs. A new iPhone! Big swingin mickey! People who get excited over new phones need to get out more. And not walk into lamp posts while they’re texting.
people who don’t get excited over new phones don’t generally take the time to read an article about a new phone and most certainly don’t take the time to post comments on an article about a new phone.
@Carlos – Except that its great fun to watch the fanboys on either side go on about how great their phone manufacturer is and how this is the best phone every and how they hate the other side and all their stuff is rubbish and how their dad has a better car than your dad, so there!
Disappointing overall. I was expecting something really exciting but it’s not there. The loss of Steve Jobs is apparent. Good article on the BBC website which sums it up for me:
The iPhone’s WiFi does not run at 5GHz, it operates in the 5GHz spectrum, which means it’s compatible with WiFi A/B/G/N.
As for the inclusion of LTE support, that could be Apple’s undoing as HTC are very close to having both the new iPad and any other Apple devices using LTE (the iPhone 5) banned from the US for patent violations.
Samsung me arse! Apple is the most VALUABLE company on the WORLD, if they brought out a phone that could fly people hear would hate on it, never seen such a bunch of wingers in me life as what is on journal.ie!
I wonder what part of it will fail first. I’m posting this from an early iPhone4 with a broken power button, a well known fail, but still not reported as much as the signal drop.
No, they provide a workaround in the form of Lightning to microUSB adapter. You can buy it in Apple store for €19 (seriously). Apparently that’s good enough.
the s3 is a poor phone at best. the highlights were gimiky and hardly work. I worked in a mobile phone store and the Samsung rep couldnt get them to work. we also had quite a few returned faulty.the build of the phone is very cheap for a 500$plus phone. in my option the s2 is a better bet or the one x
I know people are saying this phone has a lack of innovation but honestly is there much more apple, Samsung and the likes can really add to a phone that hasn’t already been thought of and done?! Even siri is a bit of a stupid gimmick when you think about it
I own a Samsung nexus s…googles flagship phone from 2 years ago. I have had multiple issues with software crashes, lack of responsiveness as well as a myriad of network issues (to do with the phone, not my provider) and I’m very tempted to switch to an iPhone.
IPhones are extremely stable, and while limited in certain areas eg. Open source and customisation, this is not necessarily a bad thing. I’ve been an avid android fan due to the openness of the system, however I think it may start to be its downfall because of fragmentation.
Yes agreed apple are stable but from s2 till s3 Samsung have got it right. The ice cream sandwich android system is new improved and far more stable. Couple of years ago I’d not touch android but now it’s far far superior.
People vote with wallets so lets see at years end who has more control of the markets and in my humble opinion it won’t be apple not even close
thing is James apple hold 30% market share with one phone. android will always outsell the iPhone. but individually an android phone will never live up to iPhone sells. android op is still way behind the apple os. I’m not a iPhone head I have a one x. it crashes or apps crash all the time. the s3 is a poor fine looks creap and the highlights are very gimiky. there’s better phones for ur money.
I green thumbed that by the way! Wasn’t aware of all that, I suppose I myself am one of those blinded by the apple thing! Maybe it’s time for a change!
@Paul Mallon, there is an app in the Samsung store to prolong your battery called Green Power. I get more than a full day out of my S3 now and I would be a heavy user.
cool, but Garreth was implying that your android phones battery life won’t be worth anything without these apps, I get a full day without them.
If I can get more than a day with them all the better. I’ll check it out.
People who kill apps don’t properly understand how the android platform works, you’re not supposed to kill them, android phones keep the most recently used applications active for quick access, android kills the least used apps itself when you load a new app that requires the memory. True multi-tasking, don’t think the iPhone had that either, not sure if 5 does. You don’t need apps to monitor the battery life, some widgets are useful if you like a big icon on your screen, but you don’t need them. I’m getting nearly 11 hours out of my GS3 without any battery monitors.
While I have a 4s, I love it, and having the 3 models before it too, i never had a problem with any iPhone. They are simple to use and they do what I want.
Now, I could probably get the iPhone 5 on a free upgrade, and I’m already with O2 for years so another 18 months doesn’t bother me. Infact, I haven’t paid for any of my iPhones up front with cash, it’s just been lobbed into the contract. Grand job.
I can sell my as new 4s for about €300 tomorrow, so I’m up money and a new phone.
My only dilemma is the accessories I have bought for my phones won’t work with the new one, unless I use the adapter. And looking at them all, they might not let the longer iPhone 5 fit into them.
Hey phone snobs!
Try going a week or two without using technology like this and see how much you appreciate it. People today are so blasé about so much, technology, politics, music, film. Isn’t it about time to count our blessings and appreciate these things instead of whining on the internet? Just saying guys…
Anyone interested to buy an iPhone4 black, 16 gb, December 2010, unlocked, with cover and in perfect conditions?
If yes, contact me: bebofolies@gmail.com (Dublin).
The a6 chip that goes into the Iphone Basically it’s the heart of the device that goes into the Iphone is built and owned by Samsung. So if it not for Samsung Iphone will never been invented. I have a Samsung. Long live the king
I’d praise Apple for innovative technology, I’d be more than happy to be blown away by the iPhone 5, but their’s nothing there to rave about really. Most techies who are into mobiles will go with what’s best, irrespective of brand.
But given the way Apple locks down their OS and doesn’t allow personalisation, that generally means people who like playing with their technology will rule out the iPhone straight away, and that might come across as hating on the iPhone but its not, it’s just there are better phones out there.
Apple pitch everything as new, innovative ideas, better, thinner, faster as if they are leading the industry – they’re not, they’re careful to talk about everything in relation to the previous iPhones these days.
Go take a look at the keynote speech for the first iPhone, THAT was innovative, THAT was industry leading, THAT was a world changing device. But now, on version 5 they’re still trotting out the same phone, pushing “innovations” that other companies have had for ages now and claiming it as “new” like they’re revolutionising the industry every time. iPhone 4 was a nice upgrade too, lovely design, but aside from that there’s really nothing special there at all.
My point is it’s not true that everyone here are wingers who are gonna hate no matter what. It’s not 2007 any more, Apple need to seriously raise their game if they want to compete into the future. The iPhone 5 is nothing special, and a lot of Apples policies in relation to their app store and customisation of the phone are too restrictive for a lot of people.
