Chronic homelessness is around 100,000 in the US

Actually its 500,000 the remainder is in emergency shelter.

This American report says an estimated 643,067 people experienced homelessness in the U.S. on a given night in 2011 – down from 636,017 in 2009.

Even if you click on the link from that MSNBC article it says

“Chronic homelessness decreased by 3 percent from 110,911 in 2009 to 107,148 in 2011. The chronically homeless population has decreased by 13 percent since 2007. The decrease is associated with an increase in the number of permanent supportive housing beds from 188,636 in 2007 to 266,968 in 2011.Permanent supportive housing ends chronic homelessness.”

“A majority of homeless people counted were in emergency shelters or transitional housing programs, but nearly 4 in 10 were unsheltered, living on the streets, or in cars, abandoned buildings, or other places not intended for human habitation. The unsheltered population increased by 2 percent from 239,759 in 2009 to 243,701 in 2011, the only subpopulation to increase.”

You might want to look at europe first when it comes to been homeless,dublin has such a large number of homeless people compared to a any city in the states.

Paul get real, you obviously have never visited the states, i have many times they have serious homeless problem.

Live here,not saying the dont have homeless people alot of them dont want help some have mental / drug problems.Most want to be left alone.Unlike ireland their not on every corner of our citys selling the big issue.Americans that visit Ireland are shocked by the amount of homeless people in dublin.

60 people sleep rough in Dublin on any given night. 2000 people in B&B or emergency shelter.

Europe has a population of 731 million, the E.U 503 million, the U.S has a population of 311 million.

Thats a bit of an exaggeration when you say they are on every street cornor. Those that are out selling the Big issue are trying to better ones life. I would rather see that than people sleeping in a doorway, i was in miami and new york recently. People sleeping under freeways , hundreds in miami. In new york i was asked for money and cigarettes every day i was in the city. You say American tourists are shocked when they see homeless people in Dublin, they must live in a bubble back home with blinkers on. The people that beg on the streets of Dublin come here from central europe the majority. They are in accomodation, its a business to them thats what they know.

“Cental europe” you mean to say there are germans an austrians begging in Ireland,Im sure its eastern europeans.As a pasty euro tourist in the nyc Im sure you stood out a mile for the hobos to hit on.The illegals and cuban refugees make up alot of the homeless in miami,life on the rough in the usa seems far better to them than what the left,charitys and food stations provde them with clothes and food.I have been hit up for cigs more times in irish bar by “irish people” than I ever have been by the homeless here.Try and take a walk down by the liffey walkway,its all homeless and junkies almost all natives.Sad but true,but I think its u who is in the bubble

In new york 5200 sleep on the streets and subway every night the majotity of these are from new york, and over 41,000 sleep in shelters.

never been to carlow,I dont know what your so bent on with that jibe,but i have been to london where it seems that dublin exports its homeless people to,maybe thats why theirs only 60 of them left in dublin.

The Irish that are homeless in London tend to be from the country of Ireland that worked in construction and fell on hard times. Read the Dublin Simon community they will give you some FACTS about homelessness in the city. Id say your a Laois man. If you ever come to London ill show you around. I know the streets very well. LOL

There isn’t much need for further urbanisation in the west, and anyway we already know how to do that, it’s just lack of motivation that prevents us from making our existing cities sustainable. The developing world will see massive urbanisation in the coming decades and a lot of this will be in deserts and places where we don’t have experience in building cities. The challenge is to help the rest of the world to urbanise in a sustainable way, and a lot of it will have to be in deserts unless you want everyone to come here and/or build in fertile land and then where’s the food gonna come from?
It’s easier to do it right once than fix it later, but it’s a pretty sterile experiment if it doesn’t include people, hard to imagine why they couldn’t do it with a computer model of it excludes the human aspect.
