WOMEN CONTROL 58 per cent of all spending and influence 89 per cent of all purchases made by households in Ireland.

However, according to new research, 41 per cent believe they are still misunderstood by marketers and advertisers.

The people over at She Commerce want to change this and are teaching brands how to market stuff to women at a seminar in Dublin today.

The hashtag #pursepower has become popular on Twitter as marketers share some rules that should be followed when selling to the all important woman-of-the-house.

We’ve had a look at some of the facts, figures and tips emerging from the conference (via Twitter):

  • What a cynical marketing ploy!
To date most advertising towards women rely on gender bashing – stupid man can’t figure something out the clever woman shows him how routine – an insult to all genders.
Hope it’s not more of that!

  • Seeing those ads for woman cosmetics the so called celebs with perfect hair and perfect skin all sorts of light tricks and digital manipulation going on. Making the women seeing these ads feel less about themselves not perfect and just ordinary. And I’ve just noticed the ads on tv are mostly for cosmetics.

  • I swear I spend as much on cosmetics now as I did before the recession started, most months it’s £0. The whole sling-a-martini-glass-on-on-the-packaging approach makes me embarrassed that there are women who actually fall for this stuff. If you see a woman in an advert, she’s either trying to make herself look/feel/smell perfect, going shopping for the kids’ dinner, or about to patronise a man for not being able to work the vacuum cleaner.

There was some group of white-toothed schmucks in college today giving out goodie bags about branding for the youth market, or some such nonsense. It’s not just women being stereotyped by advertising execs, but the idea of an entire conference of people trying to figure out how to make people spend the little money they do have on useless stuff like hairspray and ridiculously expensive skin creams is a bit scary.
