If you’re thinking about making the switch, here’s what you need to do:
Make Sure You Have A Compatible Device
iOS 7 will only work on iPhones that are iPhone 4 or later, Retina display iPads, iPad 2, and the fifth-generation iPod touch.
Carve Out Some Time
Historically, Apple makes its software available around 6pm (Irish time) on the release day. When lots of people download it at the same time, it crowds Apple’s servers. If you can wait, try downloading iOS7 in a few days. If you’re impatient, be prepared for a sluggish download.
Update iTunes
If you back up your iPhone or iPad to iTunes, or if you plan to install iOS7 from iTunes, make sure you are running the latest version (11.1).
You can check by opening iTunes and going to Help > Check for Updates. Make sure you restart iTunes after installing the latest version.
Back Up Your Device
Back up your device to iTunes. This is extremely important as it will let you keep your contacts, photos, and apps from the previous iOS.
You can also back it up to iCloud. Go to Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup. Under Backup, turn on the switch for iCloud Backup.
Update iOS
When iOS 7 becomes available, you can update with a good Wi-Fi connection by going into your settings and grabbing the software update. This is an easy way to do it if you’re on the go.
You can also use iTunes to upgrade your software.
Plug your device into your computer with the USB cord and launch iTunes. On the left side of iTunes, find and select your device. Click “Check for Update” which will appear automatically. When the dialogue box appears, select “Download and Update”.
Wait
Be patient as you wait for the download. If you interrupt the process you could risk disrupting the update.

The author of this article wants everyone to hold off, just so that they can download it themselves, faster. Good thinking.
I’m going to wait until tomorrow. It’s what Bill Murray would do.
Same here! Waited and waited (saving my upgrade) for the iPhone 5 but actually bought the 4s the week the 5 came out because I hated iOS6 so much and wanted iOS5 back.
I’ve had ios 7 for a few months now, very little problems in the final release. A drastic improvement all round too, would definitely recommend you update when you can :)
Aaaaand a massive congrats to you all. You now have an Android phone. Lame Apple… Just Lame… Everything ‘ new’ about it has been a feature on Android for ages, yet Apple make out like it’s revolutionary. Kinda like Siri really. :-/
? Girl apple invented the smart phone ! Not a fan boy but they really did , Samsung do as most Asian companies do and copy something there already! Admittedly android has nice features apple don’t have but vice versa!
Never a truer word was spoken. They think their great when android users have bigger screens faster processors and a shed load of other things that I sheep can only dream of.
Really? Fetchin 250 u should sell it r release its potential its amazing what it can do download any film album etc give it a second chance amazing phones can do more then e mail and make calls
How devastated am I that a faceless troll thinks I’m uncool… Why, why, I may not even sleep tonight…. Hang on, maybe I’ll go get an egg head profile picture, change my name to chicken mcnugget and get lobotomised. Will you let me join your cool club then??? Please??? *sigh*
Brendan, while I won’t argue that Apple invented the smart phone, almost every other manufacturer have overtaken them, Sony, Samsung and HTC in particular. Apple died with Steve Jobs. Plus, it’s the OS they’re copying and that’s Google’s doing, not Samsung and Google are American. Plus, Samsung make almost all of the components for iPhone’s. No argument that they’re trailing badly. Android now way outselling Apple!
“They’re”. If you’re going to spew a mound of bull-crap, at least get the phrasing right.
If anything, it’s the android users who come across as extremely fan-boyish every time the iPhone is mentioned. How pathetic is your life that you feel the need to compete, over phone types?
Oh it’s not turned into one of those sort of threads….
The truth lies in neither google nor apple stealing features from each other but rather from independent developers on both platforms inspiring the dev teams in their respective camps.
So many new features on iOS7 borrow heavily from stuff that has been available on jailbroken iPhones for a long time now.
At the end of the day it’s all only software, if you wanted you can run Android on an iPhone. This debate has gotten so old of Apple vs. it’s nearest competitors. I’m actually beginning to respect windows fanatics for not chiming in on these arguments recently, but then again who actually uses Windows Phone? :p
I have to say I don’t think they are trailing! It’s just a thing of which interface you prefer I suppose! I like apple and my friend likes android ! I like the simplicity of apple and their hardware is great! Any phone that can last two years with me is indestructible!
It’s actually pointless trying to enlighten Apple fanboys. IPhone’s are smartphones for dummies. And as it happens, all the Samsung bashing, firstly, the S4 is the smartest smartphone on the market and secondly, I’m actually not referring to Samsung exclusively as most of you seem to assume, I actually use the Sony Xperia Z which is a way better phone than either the iPhone 4s or the. 5. (I had both) Way more reliable, never requires reboot unlike iPhone, battery life is way better and it’s practically indestructible!
The android apple love hate forum… My 3GS is too old for iOS 7 and I’m gutted. Apple can’t win anyway regardless of innovations or what some of you term “catching up”. Do I want a big huge screen with a plasticky removable back which can take higher pixel pictures that the human eye can’t even see, and add pointless sound to a picture, while downloading some music illegally? No! I’m perfectly happy with my 3GS and iOS 6! What annoys me even more is Sansung release a new Galaxy something or other every other week and no one complains!!
There is 4 joe not really every week wrote from my i pad mini which i love but apple phones r light years behind my s4. daughter has i phone 3g still a great phone.
Three cans of diet coke and a slab of chocolate to get me through it…just as it updated it crashed my phone switched off…forgot my pin..remembered my pin…verified updated..finally..updated!
I know! Folks – Android also “just works” right out of the box. Then on top of that you can do so much more that with Apple. You can leave it simple enough for an iPhone user to figure out, or customize it to your heart’s content. Are iFans resentful that they are stuck in the Apple dungeon and would have to upgrade all of their other toys to be compatible if they switched to one of the better platforms?
Is it possible to watch tv portal have a work i phone sits and stays in car cradle light years behind my s4 new operating system wow unless u have both u wont realise how far behind apple is.
Tried it, said 14 hours remaining. Reset device and it continued downloading. And then an error occurred. I’m just gonna wait a few weeks till the bugs are fixed.
Freedom = Android .
Why do you think they call it JAIL BROKEN
Apple is for the muppet the Sheep the ones who look at ads and say wow not why.
Enjoy your update to a 2010 Android ui while Android is already setting up kitkat
God bless Steve Jobs turning in his grave at the thought of colourful cheap plastic “new” I phones .
You have to jail break it to download torrents, this I would not advise. If you really want torrent movies on your phone put them there via your laptop.
There’s no release version of iOS 7 jailbroken yet and could be weeks/months before there is, if you’re really intent on downloading torrents on your phone, stay on iOS6. Contrary to popular scaremongering it’s neither illegal nor irreversible to jailbreak your iPhone.
Was pretty sure apple take a dim view of it tho, void the warrantee perhaps? Anyway it must take a lot of battery and wifi/3G or whatever to download movies on your phone. I don’t see the point if you have a laptop.
They encourage user not to do it: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3743
It is in violation of the end user license agreement for iOS, but then again, so are many activities users knowingly or unbeknownst to themselves undertake with plenty of software that they use day to day. The only threat Apple has is if you try and get a device serviced with a jailbroken OS on it, they won’t touch it. This is a fairly empty threat as the phone can be restored to its original state pre-jailbreak
I attempted updating directly from my phone and estimated time was 27 hours then after about 40 minutes of waiting it failed. I connected my phone to my laptop to update it and was don in less than 15 minutes :)
It’s like having a new phone all over again
Yes their servers are hammered millions try download same time, try couple more times it should cop on I had to try checking for update 4 or 5 times before it offered me upgrade button..or if you’re not dying to have it tonight like me try tomorrow or later surely will work better.
Downloaded it overnight, nothing jumps out at me, except the screen does seem magically bigger. Also I’m making less typos. Will have a good root around in it today, that’ll be nice.
