Apple removes HMV music app from App Store

The music store say they have been given no explanation why.

HMV SAY THEY have been given no explanation as to why Apple have removed the HMV app from the iOS App Store.

The app was was released last Thursday and HMV say that so far it has been downloaded over 10,000 times.

HMV say that the app was suspended last night is exactly same version as the one which was approved by Apple in 15 September.

Paul McGowan, chairman of HMV said that it was disappointing that Apple has chosen to suspend an app he says has proven to be very successful since its release:

We are unable to explain the change in Apple’s position as we have been given no explanation by them as to any difference they view between the approved version and the one suspended this evening.

HMV say that the suspension of the app from the Apple store will only affect potential users as those who have already downloaded it will see no change to their service.

In the past few days McGowan has tweeted several updates about what appears to be a degree of back and forth between HMV and Apple. In one tweet he says that Apple had requested that HMV remove the download function from the app:

The app allows users to listen to 30 second song previews and an updated version is planned to allow users to manage all HMV downloads made via the company’s online store which is set to launch this Thursday.

Android and HTML versions of the app will also launch in Ireland on Thursday.
