THE COST of the weekly shop is continuing to rise – but at a slightly slower rate than it had done in the first few months of the year.
Figures compiled by Kantar Worldpanel show that the average price of groceries rose by 4.8 per cent in the twelve months up to June 2013 – the first time in half a year that prices had risen by below 5 per cent.
However, the figures confirm that the cost of groceries is rising far beyond the general rate of inflation – meaning shoppers are being slowly squeezed as their money buys less and less.
Kantar Worldpanel commercial director David Berry said the falling increase was “a welcome sign for shoppers that months of rapid increases may be coming to an end.”
The figures are compiled based on the prices of 30,000 products, priced on June 9 this year and compared to a year previously.

The data also shows that the discount chains Lidl and Aldi are continuing to eat into the market share of other major supermarket chains.
Lidl now accounts for 7.1 per cent of all trips to supermarkets – up from 6.5 per cent in the first quarter of this year – while Aldi’s share has grown from 5.3 per cent to 6.7 per cent.
Their gains come at the expense of the larger chains, Tesco and Dunnes Stores, who both see their share fall.
Tesco remains the most popular supermarket retailer, with 27.7 per cent of the market, down from 28.6 per cent in the first three months of the year. Dunnes, meanwhile, went from 22.4 per cent to 21.9 per cent.
SuperValu’s share was unchanged at 19.7 per cent, while Superquinn retained its 5.5 per cent share.
Other outlets also suffered at the hands of Aldi and Lidl, shrinking from 11.9 per cent to 11.5 per cent.

So true! We were planning in taking our holidays in Ireland this year, but you’re looking at the guts of €200 for a hotel in Galway/ Westport per night! Total joke but typical of this country.
Galway and Westport are two of the most expensive places to stay in Ireland. You can stay in coastal hotels for half that in other parts of the country.
A few weeks ago TESCO Ireland were 42% dearer for Crunchy Nut Cornflakes 750g than Tesco UK (Both on Tesco online sites – with the Exchange rate calculated) – Now THAT’S a #RipOff
I tried so hard to do my shopping in Lidl and Aldi but I just find it impossible to do a weeks shopping in them. It ended up costing more as I had to go to Dunnes to buy the rest!
‘a welcome sign for shoppers that months of rapid increases may be coming to an end.” what BS, they are still increasing just not as fast…a welcome sign for shoppers would be a decrease or steady prices.
I don’t think its just Dunnes. My milkman just put up the price of Avonmore milk by 10c on the litre too. I’ve been hearing for a while warnings of increased costs re dairy farming that were going to hit the consumers in the long run, so it wasn’t unexpected for me at least.
I hadn’t heard that Karen, but I stopped buying Avanmore Supermilk a few years ago when I realised it was almost 50c dearer than Premier. Guess the price of cheese, yoghurt and eggs are going up too.
I don’t think there’s much difference between Aldi and Lidil and the rest of the mainstream supermarkets. I also think their fruit is completely tasteless. The price of food is totally ridiculous in this country and the government do nothing about it!
They can start by getting Tesco to shows their profits in Ireland, which you will find is massively more than in the UK, Treasure Ireland.
Second they can clamp down on the way the farmer is treated by these cartels. They get bugger all per head and the supermarket takes all the profit.
Third they can get the consumer watchdog to find out why in a single European market, Tesco and the like ( clothes shops too) can charge so much more here.
Upward only Rents has to be stamped out.
Min pricing on booze will stop supermarkets doing promos on drink and making the money back on food.
Would be interesting to see Tesco’s profits here but it doesn’t really concern me as I rarely shop there.
Things are more expensive here for a number of reasons. Labour costs, rents, rates, cost of transport of goods etc. The reasons are generally well known. Some are within government control and some are not. One of the main reasons is the cost of rents due to our general addiction to property.
Upwards only rent clauses were abolished as far as I know but not retrospectively.
No sure how government can address the dealings between farmers and supermarkets. Don’t know enough about the area to comment.
With regards Tesco..
I have found that they are really tricksy with their prices. They’ll have special offers that aren’t so special – for example, a 2 or 3 items for a certain price – but when you do the math the special offer costs more eg 80c each or 3 for €2.50.. And they will market that as a saving too, for those who blindly grab the supposed bargains.
When asking them about it they said it was due to the sterling / euro changeover, but then it showed up on BBCs watchdog that they were pulling this stunt in the UK too.
That and I found that the not from concentrate juice costs 10c more if you get it from the fridge rather than the shelf.. Same carton, same product – I guess it’s just a chilling charge.. Because they never offered an excuse for that anomaly..
Lee Jones, i want all of them to post profits. No company should be allowed to make that kind of money from basic essential things like food. It should be regulated.
Why should they make 3 euro on a chicken when the farmer get 60 cent and the tax 60???
dave connolly they are a business plain and simple it is an unfortunate fact of life that businesses operate on the lowest cost base and highest profit margin this is capitalism this is how the world works. you seem to forget that Tesco are one of the biggest exporters of irish fresh goods to the uk and europe it is not only what they sell but what they do to the greater economy they employ 13.5 k people directly and who knows how many indirectly
@dave connolly tesco aldi, lidl are all businesses they operate on low cost base highest profits Tesco employ 13,500 people directly and more indirectly they also export €700million (almost 9%) of food and drink exports annually this generates more money for the irish economy. corporate greed is everywhere look at apple with their tax avoidance do you want more examples?
As a good capitalist I suggest we all decrease our cost margins next quarter by stealing 20% of our weekly shop at Tesco. This will improve our profitability outlook going into the third quarter and will help us achieve our goal of a low cost economy
I would have thought Aldi and lidl’s at least 50% of the market, everyone I know shops there. There’s nothing wrong with anything they sell compared to Tesco’s etc. my mate says he won’t buy meat though for some reason !
The special offers in tesco can be good but sometimes they are not saw yogurt was special at 8 for 4 euro but the normal price for four was 1.99 so it was cheaper to buy at old price.this is why specials are located well away from the shelf that the product is on.The same is for nappies where its cheaper at the norm price rather than the special located as you enter the store so you won’t bother going down the isle.
Aldi for most of shop
Butcher or supervalue for meat
Tesco for proper specials
Dunnes for nothing
3 litres milk is €2.49 in tesco and €2.19 in Dunnes. I just buy where offers are on. It means a bit of checking around but worth it. I buy generic brands where possible and in bulk for some stuff. It’s effort but it saves a few bob.
Have to agree Jean. To me the price of Bread , Milk etc has come down dramatically. Also sawa someone comment about priice of Hotels in Ireland and we have the lovest room rates in Europe and the standard of our Hotels is excellent and that is speaking as someone who travels once a month to Europe or US.
Please explain Larry why people should not shop at Tesco, is it just to keep you happy, or what is your reasoning? As Lee has already explained Tesco, Dunnes, Lidl or Aldi do not reveal their profits for Ireland, and chances are that three out of that four expatriate their profits back to the UK or Germany. Yes in an ideal world all of the companies operating in Ireland would be Irish and their profits would stay in this country, however we have very few large indigenous companies in this country, so thankfully the likes of Tesco, Apple, Microsoft etc have all set up here and provide us with jobs that would not otherwise exist. I am not an apologist for Tesco, but lets not forget that they provide over 14,000 jobs in this country, and spend hundreds of millions on Irish produce every year, yet you for some unbelievable reason think it would be great if everybody boycotted Tesco?
Butchers for meat or else dunnes do met 3 for 9 euro. I buy nappys etc when they are on sale , and bread and milk is the same everywhere. Also most supermarkets do a clearance shelf to get rid of meat etc , you get it so much cheaper and just freeze it. I shop in dunnes and find it the cheapest and tastiest.
