It's costing more and more to fill your trolley - but the rate at which prices are increasing is slowing down. Kzenon via Shutterstock

The price of groceries is still rising - but slightly slower than before

Data from Kantar Worldpanel also shows Lidl and Aldi continuing to increase their share of Ireland’s grocery market.

THE COST of the weekly shop is continuing to rise – but at a slightly slower rate than it had done in the first few months of the year.

Figures compiled by Kantar Worldpanel show that the average price of groceries rose by 4.8 per cent in the twelve months up to June 2013 – the first time in half a year that prices had risen by below 5 per cent.

However, the figures confirm that the cost of groceries is rising far beyond the general rate of inflation – meaning shoppers are being slowly squeezed as their money buys less and less.

Kantar Worldpanel commercial director David Berry said the falling increase was “a welcome sign for shoppers that months of rapid increases may be coming to an end.”

The figures are compiled based on the prices of 30,000 products, priced on June 9 this year and compared to a year previously.

The data also shows that the discount chains Lidl and Aldi are continuing to eat into the market share of other major supermarket chains.

Lidl now accounts for 7.1 per cent of all trips to supermarkets – up from 6.5 per cent in the first quarter of this year – while Aldi’s share has grown from 5.3 per cent to 6.7 per cent.

Their gains come at the expense of the larger chains, Tesco and Dunnes Stores, who both see their share fall.

Tesco remains the most popular supermarket retailer, with 27.7 per cent of the market, down from 28.6 per cent in the first three months of the year. Dunnes, meanwhile, went from 22.4 per cent to 21.9 per cent.

SuperValu’s share was unchanged at 19.7 per cent, while Superquinn retained its 5.5 per cent share.

Other outlets also suffered at the hands of Aldi and Lidl, shrinking from 11.9 per cent to 11.5 per cent.

So true! We were planning in taking our holidays in Ireland this year, but you’re looking at the guts of €200 for a hotel in Galway/ Westport per night! Total joke but typical of this country.

Galway and Westport are two of the most expensive places to stay in Ireland. You can stay in coastal hotels for half that in other parts of the country.

I don’t think its just Dunnes. My milkman just put up the price of Avonmore milk by 10c on the litre too. I’ve been hearing for a while warnings of increased costs re dairy farming that were going to hit the consumers in the long run, so it wasn’t unexpected for me at least.

    Correct

The dairies increased the costs, not the stores. Either way milk is a KVI in stores, they make a minimal profit off it

They can start by getting Tesco to shows their profits in Ireland, which you will find is massively more than in the UK, Treasure Ireland.

Second they can clamp down on the way the farmer is treated by these cartels. They get bugger all per head and the supermarket takes all the profit.

Third they can get the consumer watchdog to find out why in a single European market, Tesco and the like ( clothes shops too) can charge so much more here.

Upward only Rents has to be stamped out.

Min pricing on booze will stop supermarkets doing promos on drink and making the money back on food.

    thats just for starters

Would be interesting to see Tesco’s profits here but it doesn’t really concern me as I rarely shop there.

Things are more expensive here for a number of reasons. Labour costs, rents, rates, cost of transport of goods etc. The reasons are generally well known. Some are within government control and some are not. One of the main reasons is the cost of rents due to our general addiction to property.

Upwards only rent clauses were abolished as far as I know but not retrospectively.

No sure how government can address the dealings between farmers and supermarkets. Don’t know enough about the area to comment.

    Agree with you on alcohol.

    With regards Tesco..
I have found that they are really tricksy with their prices. They’ll have special offers that aren’t so special – for example, a 2 or 3 items for a certain price – but when you do the math the special offer costs more eg 80c each or 3 for €2.50.. And they will market that as a saving too, for those who blindly grab the supposed bargains.

When asking them about it they said it was due to the sterling / euro changeover, but then it showed up on BBCs watchdog that they were pulling this stunt in the UK too.

That and I found that the not from concentrate juice costs 10c more if you get it from the fridge rather than the shelf.. Same carton, same product – I guess it’s just a chilling charge.. Because they never offered an excuse for that anomaly..

The special offers in tesco can be good but sometimes they are not saw yogurt was special at 8 for 4 euro but the normal price for four was 1.99 so it was cheaper to buy at old price.this is why specials are located well away from the shelf that the product is on.The same is for nappies where its cheaper at the norm price rather than the special located as you enter the store so you won’t bother going down the isle.

Please explain Larry why people should not shop at Tesco, is it just to keep you happy, or what is your reasoning? As Lee has already explained Tesco, Dunnes, Lidl or Aldi do not reveal their profits for Ireland, and chances are that three out of that four expatriate their profits back to the UK or Germany. Yes in an ideal world all of the companies operating in Ireland would be Irish and their profits would stay in this country, however we have very few large indigenous companies in this country, so thankfully the likes of Tesco, Apple, Microsoft etc have all set up here and provide us with jobs that would not otherwise exist. I am not an apologist for Tesco, but lets not forget that they provide over 14,000 jobs in this country, and spend hundreds of millions on Irish produce every year, yet you for some unbelievable reason think it would be great if everybody boycotted Tesco?
