Google's latest smartphone is a 6-inch behemoth

Alongside revealing the Nexus 6, it also announced a 9-inch tablet and the latest edition of Android called Lollipop.

GOOGLE HAS UNVEILED its latest tablet and smartphone which will run the newest version of Android, Lollipop.

The Nexus 6, which was designed by Motorola, comes with a 6-inch screen, making it bigger than the Galaxy Note phablet range (the Note 4 has a 5.7-inch screen) and the iPhone 6 Plus’ 5.5-inch screen.

The phone also includes a 13MP rear camera and claims that users will be able to get 6 hours of use from only 15 minutes of charging.

The Nexus 9 tablet was designed in conjunction with HTC and has a 8.9-inch display and comes with a 2K screen resolution.

Alongside a 8MP  rear camera and 1.6MP front-facing camera, the device boasts a 64-bit dual-core processor and a 2GB RAM.

The tablet weighs 436g and will be available with 16GB and 32GB of storage. Google is also taking inspiration a cue from Microsoft’s Surface Pro range by allowing users to purchase a magnetic keyboard covers so it can be used as a portable work station.

The biggest news from this was the naming and release of the new version of Android, named Lollipop (Android 5.0).

Lollipop Google Google

Back in June, Google showed off Lollipop, then codenamed Android L, which boasted a redesigned look called ‘material design’, designed to mimic on screen the way physical objects in the real world interact.

Lollipop will come pre-installed on both the Nexus 6 and 9 while the older Nexus devices will get it in early November.

The new edition of Android is designed to run on all devices, regardless of power meaning it will likely make its way to lower-powered devices sometime in the future.

The Nexus 9 will be made available for pre-order on 17 October, while no date has been provided for the Nexus 6 as of yet.

For here, not yet. The only price we have so far is the one David gave ($649 for Nexus 6 and $399 for Nexus 9 in the US), but I’ll update as soon as I get word back from Google.

Yeah they’re not as cheap as they used to be, but I’m seeing that as not necessarily a bad thing. The Nexus 6 is based entirely off the build and internals of the Moto X, which in itself, isn’t a cheap phone. When the price falls the quality suffers.

As much as I like the Nexus 5 to use, it was never based off any particular phone, so although it was cheap, it suffered slightly in the build quality dept.

I’ve heard of reputable reviewers and sources that the build quality is pretty good with a core metal frame that feels really good and high quality. As for the specs…3GB RAM 1080p screen (401ppi), 2.5ghz Snapdragon 801 Quad core. I dunno what bull you’re spinning mate about mediocre specs

Yeah the internals certainly were, but the body and chassis weren’t based off anything it seems which is generally a bad way to go. I’ve a Nexus 4 and it’s pretty much an LG Optimus G outside and inside and the Nexus 6 is pretty much a Moto X. I think if they’re based off current manufacturers flagship phones it makes for a better build is all!

I have to disagree.I have both phones and if you drop a nexus 5 it will get a few scrapes etc. You drop a 4 and you have smashed glass on the back.5 is just an all doing better phone

It was based on the LG G2 and the build quality is fantastic, I have one, I’ve carried it around in my pocket, with no cover, for the last 11 months, and it’s still like new, there isn’t one mark on it.

The screen on the 6 is way too big for me to consider updating, I really hope Android L makes it to my Nexus 4 soon though it looks great. A shame to see them move away from the low cost approach but I guess it’s to be expected there is some pretty hefty hardware in that thing

I like the sound of its turbo charging – 6 hours battery life in 15 minutes, 6″ screen sounds massive though, might until I see it in the wild before deciding whether to buy it. Lollipop sounds great too, can’t wait to get it on Friday.
