Google exec: How to get Google Maps on your iPhone

Is there a standalone app on the way?

APPLE’S NEW MAPS app debuted on Thursday and people are not happy about it.

In case you haven’t heard, Apple removed Google Maps from coming included with the iPhone. Apple’s newest software update, iOS 6, wiped out YouTube too.

Many are wondering if a stand-alone Google Maps app will be released any time soon. Google released a standalone YouTube app last week, but it’s Maps future doesn’t seem as certain.

iDownloadBlog found a Bloomberg TV clip of a Google executive discussing the situation, and it seems like we might not have to wait too long.

Dan Cobley, Google’s UK marketing director, spoke with Bloomberg TV and said, “iPhone 5 users can still use Google Maps just by downloading them or going to the Google Maps website.”

Sounds like Cobley just spilled the beans that a standalone Google Maps app is in the works for the iPhone and iPad. In the meantime, he’s saying you can use the web-based version of Google Maps on your iPhone like we showed you yesterday.

SearchEngineLand reached out to Google and got the official response:

We believe Google Maps are the most comprehensive, accurate and easy-to-use maps in the world. Our goal is to make Google Maps available to everyone who wants to use it, regardless of device, browser, or operating system.

I don’t really get the bashing from one side to the other – it’s pointless.
If you like beer, and I like cider, don’t try to convince me that beer tastes better, just accept it and move on.
Both OS’s have faults – it’s technology. Get over yerselves – both sides – because it’s embarrassing quite frankly – yis are like 6 year olds on a playground.

You are correct, but I think that here the main point is the decrease in the quality of the ios. Android is only mentioned because at this point in time it is the only real alternative.

    • You’re right. personally I can’t resist. Apple fans just come across odd to say the least.
Look at the point below. you only buy android cos u can’t afford an iphone. Cmon all current phone are free with ?40 per Mon contact ..
      ..give me a break.

I was looking forward to IOS6 as the maps where suppose to come with voice directions aswell but seeing that their maps are crap I won’t be updating

    • Android navigation app already does this and has done for several years.

    • Won’t be updating either as too many updates apply only to iPhone 4s and 5.
I just cannott get over apples arrogance to offer us what they want us to purchase.
I have been with Apple from the start but decided a few days ago to venture into android land.
Android is far more flexible. It gives you so many options.
And the Samsung Galaxy is amazing in every way.
It’s goodbye Apple until they sort themselves out.

  • I really don’t think you can call Android the ‘poor man’s ios’. This is a typically ignorant comment made by an Apple user. I made the change a long time ago and I’m so glad I did. I’m on my second Android phone now and I have even convinced other IPhone users to make the change. With the release of ios6 and the imminent arrival of the IPhone 5 it proves that Apple have fallen behind Android in the technology stakes. The Galaxy S3 and HTC one X are far superior devices to the IPhone 5 and they’ve been on the market a while now and when Jelly Bean SW is launched it will be another nail in Apple’s coffin. But none of this will matter to an Apple user because their products are reassuringly expensive and therefore the best. ;)

Where do apple get off telling you what apps you can and can’t use. I moved to android years ago. best decision ever

    Reply
    • When did they tell you what apps to or not to use??? Apples agreement with google maps expired and they developed their own maps app. If google want to develop a third party app it’s up to them. Typical android user comment. Inferior hardware and software but you’ll convince yourself apple is evil because you don’t want to pay a bit more for better quality. At the end of the day the iPhone is an incredible piece of technology and built to a standard not seen before with personal electronics that’s in turn forced other manufacturers to step their products quality up a notch but still lag behind apple. Android is a copy of apple OS as none of them existed before 2007’s iPhone launch. I only ever see android users slating the iPhone in these comment threads but never the other way round. I guess iPhone users aren’t jealous enough to do so.

    • O – M – frickin G!!!! I urge you to go back over that comment there ‘I shit you not’. You completely contradict what you were trying to say to the point of embarrassment. And android copying iOS, sure they did….. Initially…. Before they overtook them n left them behind!! I have an iPhone but will fully acknowledge that android is way better. It’s actually Apple fanboys like yourself that turn a lot of people off buying an Apple product for fear of one day sounding like that!!!!
      Good Day. :)

    • @Olwyn that’s comment of the week. All that you said is so true plus what gets me is when apple act that a feature didn’t exist until it is on the iphone. Take “facetime” for example, a piece of crap LG phone I had, had it 2 years before the iphone!
As for the apple build quality, the first thing any person does is stick a big dirty cover & screen protector on it. It could be made from melted tayto packets and you couldn’t tell.
I guess apple fans like the shiny, shiny box…..

As much as I love my iPhone the recent iOS upgrade has seriously affected the experience. To take what can be considered the best in class map app and replace it with the best in class comedy app is a retrograde step for apple. Also removing YouTube as an app for iPad is infuriating. How can this be considered in the best interest of the consumer. Apples arrogance has trumped any loyalty to its immense customer base. Frankly your point, well misses the point.

      Reply
    • Why do people think apple removed YouTube because they thought it was in the best interest of whoever. YouTube paid to be included in the iOS before. They don’t now so they don’t get automatically put on the home screen!! Should apple include someone else’s app for free??? You can just download it like every other app. As for how different it is..that’s up to YouTube how their app functions.

    • Another point of interest if you decide to update to iOs 6.
It will take up approx. 2.5 Gb of space.
As far as most iPhones are concerned this is a major chunk of your memory used up.

    • @ Damian. Yes, you’re completely right. FaceTime, Siri, turn by turn navigation….. It’s been done quite a long time before Apple picked up on it. But who would we be to go up against the bling brigade. They’ll never get it. Personally, I’m holding out to see the Sony Mint before I go for the S3.

    • Shit you not you are by far the most blinded commentator here. All we are pointing out is that apple have reduced the features on the phone. Google maps is an incredibly handy bit of kit. Remember it’s been lurking on your iPhone for years. I’m not interested in arguing about the merits of an android equipped phone. It’s the end user experience that counts and that has been affected negatively. Not that you care as you fiddle with with your bits.

@shityounot Sorry to burst your little fanboi bubble but the android os actually predates ios by a couple of years.
also you do realise that your superior hardware in your iphone is manufactured by samsung who use it in their own smartphones first months before letting apple near it.
I prefer android for lots of reasons but i dont look down my nose at people who choose apple (having a choice is great), unless like you they are ill-informed, fanboi morons who insist on spouting crap when really they havent a clue what theyre talking about.

      Classic!

You do realise this article only exists because iPhone’s mapping tool is inferior to Google’s?

  • I upgraded to ios6 and I have to say it’s crap!! Not many difference except for taking away youtube app and the new app is not as cool as the last one and then the map thing I dont get it, I still have the old maps plus the new one and who ever did the new map hasn’t a clue of stuff!! There is this new app too called passbook which is suppose to be cool to use to scan flight tickets and the rest and I was looking at a tutorial on youtube how to use it, went into the webste and omg!!! It’s so complicated!!! I am finishing my contract on 20 november and will be upgrading to android

  • First big mistake in the post Jobs era…I was seriously considering upgrading my ipad 2 for the ipad 4 next year due to the better screen and other expected improvements if they do materialise, but I never imagined the ios would move backwards…

With xbmc nearly ready for android, Apple will have to set up the mark to keep my business.

  • Until iOS devices can handle proper multitasking they’re not a viable option for me. My iPad usage has dropped drastically since I got my s3 despite having a much bigger screen… It’s just so much easier to get things done on Android. Will iPhone users be able to use turn by turn in the new GMaps app if it ever materialises? That’s another huge shortcoming there.

My phone is the only device I use that’s not Apple because I’m not a fan boy and I’ll use whatever I feel is the best device for any given job. The iPhone is a great piece of technology but let’s call a spade a spade, some of the functionality its missing is kind of unacceptable considering what the competition is pushing.

  • Apple are screwed if they keep down this road. Locking users into functionally is fine to a point but this is starting to get ridiculous. It serves it’s purpose though. My mother has an Iphone and doesn’t call me everyday for advise on how to use it and can use most functionality on it with ease. Android falls behind there.

That’s really where the advantages of IOS end though. I switched to Android last year and will never go back. Despite it being open source it hasn’t turned into a clusterf*ck and there are more apps now than when I first made the switch.

    • Why would being open source make something bad?

Firefox is open source and it revolutionised the internet. In fact, most of the internet runs on Linux servers running Apache, both of which are open source.

I just don’t understand where people get the idea that open = bad and proprietary = good.

    Shit You Not.
You can only install apps onto an iphone from the apps store.
Apps only get into the apps store if apple approves them.
That means you can only install apps on a iphone that apple has decided to let you.

  • Google maps have a lot of errors in them too! Granted Apple is starting from a position well behind Google but when it catches up then we should have a superior offering.

  • Copycat devices are just that! At least Apple are developing and in so doing there is a learning process. I will always support original designers! Clearly the business relationship with Google is ended and Apple are moving in a new direction. I’m am sure maps etc will improve.

    • Apple are not original designers. The only original thing they have produced is a flawless marketing campaign that convinces people that they are original designers.

It is your option to fund their r&d…if it does not improve many will jump over to Android.

    • People are making such a big deal about nothing. If google maps is your gripe on iOS then browse to maps.google.ie and save the maps icon to your phone. This will give you google maps on your phone. You always required web access with the old maps app. You loose street view but it was always a nice to have anyway. How many times did you seriously use it. If you are truly in need of a navigation map app go and buy a Tom Tom or another. The maps app was always Apples they got the data service from google so had every right to select a different data supplier.

You can do the same as the above with you tube. I used both if these apps frequently on previous iOS version and I really haven’t lost any sleep about the new version.

I have nothing against android I think it’s a great OS but people need to realise it doesn’t come fault free – it’s as buggy as any OS out there. It has taken google many many iterations to get their maps correct. Nothing works perfectly in version 1. Google apps for business has now been out there for about 6 years – bar gmail it’s still crap. So get over these small things its not as if you cannot leave the house without a maps app!

      Reply
    • David: it’s terrible that you have to defend removal of features that some people did actually rely on. ‘sure that was just nice to have’, why should you have to accept that it was removed?

      Reply
    • Niall while I agree with you that Apple are innovative, the main focus here is on maps. When a user gets notified about an update on their iPhone then I think they are expecting to see improvements after applying said update? The new maps app are a disappointing step backwards. The maps contain many inaccuracies, satellite imaging is less sharp/detailed vis a vis Google Maps. There’s no Street View and there’s unlikely to be anytime soon. The new 3D option is a nice gimmick but doesn’t really do much for me. These maps were not ready for prime time but they shipped anyway. This type of corner cutting is surely the antithesis of what the Apple brand stands for in the minds of most consumers? Who knows what Steve Jobs would say about this? Maybe he’d be apologetic or maybe he’d apply his “reality distortion field” to tell us “it’s not the map, you just want to go to the wrong place!”
