5 apps worth downloading this week

Get quick fit, learn to DJ, and/or finally get your photos organised.

EACH WEEK, WE highlight five apps that are worth downloading for your smartphone and table. There are a lot of apps released every day, but not all of them are worth paying attention to.

This week features a quick way to get fitter, a cheap way to learn how to DJ, and an app to help (finally) get your photos organised.

Name: Quick Fit

For: iOS

Cost: 99 cent

Busy? Finding it tough to find enough time to exercise? This app promises to get your arse in gear in one 7 minute routine.

Described as the ‘perfect workout for busy people’ by its creators, the app has 12 exercises which each have to be done for 30 seconds with a 10 second break in between each one.

There are videos to steer you in the right direction, you can track your progress and unlock achievements on the app.

There’s also a 4 minute version, if you’re REALLY pressed for time every day (but seriously, come on).

If you’re dedicated enough to download an app, but not quite motivated enough to actually join a gym, then this could help you get moving.

Quick Fit

Name: edjing (yes, that’s the name of it)

For: iOS, Android, Windows

Cost: Free

If you’ve ever listened to David Guetta or Calvin Harris and thought ‘I could totally do that’, then here’s a way to start having a go at DJing without breaking the bank on equipment.

The app lets you mix music stored on your phone, or from iTunes, Deezer and Soundcloud, so you’re not going to run out of music.

There is a wide range of mixing tools and sound-effects (including one that lets you add scratches), plus you can share the finished recordings on social media.

If you’re ready to step up, the Pro version was released this week for €7.99.

Magic 8 Ball

For: iOS

Cost: Free

Yes, it’s a bit stupid but it’s also weirdly compulsive – and now American toy maker Mattel has brought the retro Magic 8 Ball toy back in app form.

Ask the ball a question – either by typing it in or else just speaking out loud and wait to see what it says.

And if you’re feeling nostalgic, you can shake your phone to reveal your answer (or just let it appear. Whichever).

You can share your answers on social media, and, if you run out of questions, you can ask it to send you a daily-thought provoking question.

Plunder Pirates

For: Android

Cost: Free

From the makers of the smash-hit Angry Birds comes this rather enjoyable strategy  game where you get to explore uncharted waters and conquer the oceans.

Long story short: you’re the captain of a pirate ship and you want to build your own island stronghold, so you have to fight off other pirates, get your band of sea-farers together, and capture as much loot as you can.

The multiplayer game lets you build up a crew of teammates who are playing on their own devices.

The game lets you build the island of your own, complete with a 360-degree angle.

Lumific

For: Android

Cost: Free

Chances are you take a lot of photos with your phone, but if you’re constantly snapping, then it’s likely that some of them are quite similar.

Lumific is a smart organiser that groups similar photos together so they’re easier to find, and you have a shorter list to go through.

Tapping on any group expands them so you can view them again, in case you really need to check them again.

Selecting a photo will cause it to be automatically enhanced, alongside the usual editing features that are included.

Overall, a useful photo app that’s more than what it appears to be.
