GOLD HAS BEEN found in Wicklow and Wexford by two Irish mining companies.
Both areas will he extensively searched next year to help narrow down the area where the flecks and nuggets of gold lies and to help locate the source.
John Teeling, Chairman of the Connemara Mining Company, told TheJournal.ie that finding gold in these areas is nothing new:
Since 1796, it has been a known that there is gold between Avoca in Co Wicklow down as far as Wexford. People are known to have searched for it, but the gold occurs in narrow veins, so it’s hard to find.
The zones with the most gold are in the Tombreen and Knocknalour areas where gold has already been found.
Currently, Irish company Connemara Mining holds five licences in the Wicklow/Wexford area which are prospective for gold and Canadian gold explorer Hendrick Resources Ireland is spending €1 million to earn a 75 per cent interest in the licences.
Meanwhile, the IMC Exploration Group has found high levels of gold while drilling in Co Wexford, saying it could be worth tens of millions of euro. The find could lead to a gold mine being opened in the area, the company said.
Teeling added:
The second phase of exploration by Hendrick Resources Ltd continues to yield positive results. I am very pleased with the discovery of previously unknown gold occurrences on two of the Connemara licences. Follow up close spaced soil sampling will be conducted early in 2013 to refine drill targets.The full programme is being carried by Hendrick at no cash cost to Connemara.
