AN AIR TRAFFIC controllers strike due to take place this morning across Germany was called off at the last minute, after the controllers’ employer DFS agreed to enter mediation talks.
The travel plans of up to 400,000 air passengers would have been disrupted if the six-hour strike had gone ahead as planned this morning.
A Frankfurt court ruled late yesterday that the strike could proceed despite DFS’ objections, the Financial Times reported last night. The industrial action was subsequently called off when DFS agreed to enter mediation, a move which Reuters reports invokes a four-week ban on strikes.
Air traffic controllers have been threatening to strike over a dispute with their employers over pay and conditions. A strike it had planned for last Thursday was cancelled after DFS secured an injunction against it.

However, it seems that European holiday-makers could still be affected by air travel strikes as Spanish baggage handlers threaten to strike for two days this month.
The Daily Mail reports that three unions covering over 60,000 workers are planning to strike on 18 August and 26 August in protest over the dismissal of a baggage handler.
