Central Bank director Fiona Muldoon resigns

Muldoon will remain in her post until May next year.

FIONA MULDOON, ONE of the directors at the Central Bank of Ireland, has resigned her position, the bank announced today.

Moldoon, who is Director of Credit Institutions and Insurance Supervision will remain at the bank until 1 May next year.

Today Muldoon said she had joined the bank at a time of “great challenge for the financial services industry and for the country”.

“It has been a privilege to work with so many others on the pressing economic and regulatory issues of the day,” she continued. “I hope I have made a meaningful contribution towards resolving some of those challenges and to the bank during my time here.”

Commenting on the announcement today, Central Bank Governor Patrick Honohan said the director brought “great leadership strengths and practical knowledge of the financial services into the role”.

She has been instrumental in many of the initiatives undertaken by the bank to address the role of the regulator, the mortgage and SME arrears issues and the stabilisation of the banking sector. She has made a significant contribution to the development and implementation of our prudential regulatory strategy in the banking, insurance and Credit Union sectors.

Honohan thanked her for her service and said he wishes her well in the future.

There has been no immediate comment on who will replace Muldoon in her role in the bank. She is the second Central Bank director to resign this year, with Director of Enforcement, Peter Oakes, stepping down in January.

I don’t know her personally, but I do know she’s good at her job. Just Google her name to find out.

Don’t know if she’ll get a golden handshake, but unlikely as she has resigned of her own accord.

As for a pension, she’ll get some partial pension based on number of years’ service in accordance with Civil Service rules at age 65.

Why is she leaving? Don’t know, but at least three high level managers have left the CB in recent months.

It would be great if the Journal would report the disgrace that is banks not passing on the recent ecb interest rate cut! This has received no media coverage. It’s about time pressure was applied and they were forced to do so! And the excuse that the gov can’t interfere is not good enough, they interfered when they gave all our hard earned money to these same banks!

I agree Bryan. She will have served 2.5 years, so her grand pension will be 6.25% of half her annual salary. It’s not as good as ppl may think. She’s a great worker I wish her well.

I’ve no doubt she had the will and determination to fix the corrupt industry but this smells like an unwillingness by the industry to cede control and a spineless uninformed government offering no support. The rule book on banking regulations needs to be ripped up and rewritten in favour of the public it is supposed to serve.

The most corrupt institution in the state yet it is privately owned. Its not Anglo and the other banks that need investigating, its the central banks owned by a den of vipers.

Thats it exactly. The banks don’t care that they brought this country to its knees. They just want to keep doing what they’ve always been doing while giving 2 fingers to anyone who tries to interfere.

In fairness, she is a high performer and of high calibre. She did not succeed to Elderfield’s role despite being the best qualified for the role. It was likely that she was aware that she could not make the contribution she wanted to make.

In addition, Ms. Muldoon made no secret of the fact that the Irish Banks needed vastly more capital. Politically that was unattractive even though it was a prudent assessment.
