Facebook acquires facial recognition firm Face.com

The terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but Face.com has welcomed the opportunity to work directly with Facebook.

FACEBOOK HAS ACQUIRED the facial recognition company Face.com for an undisclosed sum following negotiations between the two companies.

In a statement on its blog, Face.com welcomed the acquisition, saying that by working with Facebook directly “we’ll have more opportunities to build amazing products that will be employed by consumers – that’s all we’ve ever wanted to do.”

“Our mission is and has always been to find new and exciting ways to make face recognition a fun, engaging part of people’s lives, and incorporate remarkable technology into everyday consumer products.”

“Our mission is and has always been to find new and exciting ways to make face recognition a fun, engaging part of people’s lives, and incorporate remarkable technology into everyday consumer products,” the statement finished.

However, Face.com didn’t elaborate on what it’s role with Facebook might be and some users have criticised it for failing to outline the future of its service. The company currently offers two facial recognition apps through Facebook – Photo Finder and Photo Tagger.

Facebook shares have been slowly gaining in recent days but are still trading below the $38 at which it floated on 18 May. The shares are currently priced at $31.91.
