Facebook's plans to take over the world are taking two steps forward

Virtual reality is the major focus but it’s also looking at ways to help people deal with more data-intensive services like video.

HAVING WRAPPED UP social and messaging, Facebook plans to make its mark in two major areas, virtual reality (VR) and developing services needed to deal with rising data usage.

Its CEO Mark Zuckerberg made an appearance during Samsung’s press event at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, as part of Samsung’s Gear VR product. The headset is another VR device that Oculus VR, the company Facebook bought back in 2014, helped develop.

Zuckerberg compared the rise of VR to its other messaging services like WhatsApp and Messenger and views it as another way of connecting people. The company announced the creation of a ‘social VR’ team which will look at the different ways people can use the technology for interaction both today and in the future.

“We’ve already helped people connect in a wide variety of ways on mobile devices – ranging from Facebook and Instagram to Messenger and WhatsApp – and now we want to apply the same approach to the new medium of VR,” the company said in a blog post.

In the future, VR will enable even more type of connection – like the ability for friends who live in different parts of the world to spend time together and feel like they’re there with each other.

Samsung announced that it would include its VR headset, the Gear VR, with any pre-orders of the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. The device requires recent Samsung smartphones to operate and on its own, it costs $99. Zuckerberg also said that people have watched more than one million hours of 360 video in Gear VR.

It wasn’t the only thing that Facebook announced that would have implications for connectivity. The company announced a major project called the ‘Telecom Infra Project‘ (TIP), a plan to redesign telecom infrastructure so it can deal with increasing data usage around the world.

Since new data-intensive services like video are growing and others like VR are tipped to explode over time, TIP will look at ways to help speed up the development of telecom infrastructure so both users and providers will be able to adapt to this change.

The company is teaming up with the likes of Intel and Nokia to help develop the service. The project is part of Internet.org, its plans to deliver the internet to the developing world, and looks to reduce the cost of building mobile networks across the world.

As far as VR is concerned, the most recognisable headset out there is Oculus Rift but other companies announcing developments with their VR headsets included HTC, which announced the pricing for its own headset Vive.

Since it comes with two motion sensor controllers and a built-in camera (to help wearers navigate the room without bumping into objects), the headset will cost $799, making it more expensive than the Oculus Rift, and pre-orders will open on 29 February.

I think turnout will be a lot higher than 30%. There’s a lot of anger towards this Government; they’ve broken every promise that they made to electorate. Fine Gael’s Five Point Plan no longer exists, for God’s sake. They couldn’t stand over it after two years, never mind a full term. Labour will also be hammered, given that they have completely enabled Fine Gael as opposed to acting as a counter-balance to FG’s agenda as they said they would. The established parties present the illusion that there’s no point in voting for someone else because “they’re all the same” or “it won’t make any difference”. I think people are starting to see that for the lie that it is. Change can happen slowly, Konnie.

Because if you mean forlorn or upset you might need to understand that Fine Gael and Labour have always accepted the decisions made by the electorate. Other slightly Constitutional Parties such as your own have never understood or embraced democracy and thus the Shinners always referred to themselves as the political wing (of a Military Movement). Thus we know who really guides your policy making and thus we understand that your Leader really can’t be deposed by the members in convocation.

Don’t publicly display your envy at the assumed wealth that can be amassed over a number of generations by a hard working and respectable and highly educated family. The green eyed monster is merely confirmation that you belong to the inferior grouping who don’t want to provide for themselves but expect everyone else to contribute to their intellectual and social laziness.
Jealousy ultimately creates the fiction that wealth is evil or wrong or socially unacceptable . The truth however points to the idea that ambition within society is more frequently fired up by role models and when we seek out those among us I can confirm that you won’t be on the list.

Richard I don’t understand your comment to me, I neither mentioned Sinn Fen or the bank guarantee. I was alluding to the promissory note that was converted into sovereign debt by those clowns in FG and Lab.
I’m not a Sinn Fein supporter, but that is irrelevant but I do remember SinnFein with drawing there support for the Bank Guarantee when it became all encompassing.
Don’t try to rewrite history Richie, there’s enough idiots in government trying to do that.

Is that the way you believe Sinn Fein could contribute to the running of a National economy if they became a part of a future Government !
You must be seriously deluded if you believe we would last a month were that kind of fiscal management ever happened.

I understand feeling anger towards the coalition. As others said, they have broken every promise they made. FG/LAB will never get my vote. I’m particularly disappointed with LAB, who have abandoned all pre-election principles.

It’s worrying that FF are neck and neck with FG though. As bad as FG are, FF are so much worse. Are we really going to hand the keys of the country back to the drunks that drove it of the cliff in the first place, because their successors aren’t fixing the gargantuan mess left behind quickly enough?

If FF get into power in ’16, we deserve everything we get.

I always thought that Fine Gael stood for “honesty and integrity”!

    I voted for them!

In the last few weeks the shocking revelations do not reflect the full truth!

Lobbying for so called “charities” by a FG high ranking member who was paid €80,000 PA (for lobbying) to get significant grants from Government for a Registered so called “charity” while it’s CEO was paid a salary of €250,000 PA is clearly wrong and immoral!

This Government undertook to appoint a Regulator fir Charities!

    Why the delay!

How much money did the HSE pay Alan Shatter’s Law Firm in legal fees the last year?

I thought it was illegal for Government to pay fees to “connected parties”!

Who set up Bailey for murder? Why not disclose the truth?

Well it looks like the next government will be another coalition. Without any new direction or any real reform taking place the same parties hold onto power for another five years. The only possibility looks like FF/FG in government. Just think of all those millions spent as we celebrate the 1916 rising. Dinners, speeches and back slapping between the old enemies. Austerity for those who deserve it not does who can afford it. Difference put aside to that their names can become part of history without any bullets being fired. Shatter, Hogan, O’Reilly and Kenny in ministerial office until 2021.

But no herr enda and his merrymen made such a mess of it FF are back and are going to challenge in the next general. what a fn joke.

I know of a person, at the last general election who voted for Fine Fail, because it was tradition like ye know. What on earth is wrong with people. Judge on merit given fair chance and support.
A party should be given support and the job of the opposition is to push them to make sure A. corruption is spotted and punished and B. as an alternative to the situation given. An alternative, not more of the same cr4p.
What is going on now is such a depressing mess – people here are just bickering about how bad the government are and blah blah blah – Im not saying they’re not doing a bad job but for gods sake people are just jumping on the phrasing of a sentence – its quite clear that Kenny and Gilmore have their hearts in the right place, much like Brian Lenihan of FF before as he worked with no bloody thanks with the mess he inherited from idiots before him while on deaths door.
The Health System is a mess but it has always been a mess – the problem isnt the Government its the Health System that employs people to be massively unproductive with their time and nonpunishable for laziness. The vast majority are good hard workers but some just mess the whole thing up.
What we need are rational people making tough decisions – the pot is not bottomless and I think that is what we have and any alternatives would just have to take the cash from somewhere else.
