Europe isn't happy about Three trying to buy O2

Three Ireland wants to acquire O2 for €850 million, but the European Commission has raised questions about competition in the mobile phone market.

THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION is not too happy about mobile phone network Three Ireland’s plan to buy O2′s Irish operation

Three Ireland said today that it has received an official list of objections from the EC about the proposed acquisition of its rival, which was first announced last June.

The deal, worth €850 million, had to be subject to competition approvals at a European level because of the way it would change the Irish mobile phone market.

The European Commission opened an in-depth investigation into the deal two months ago.

If the sale gets approval to go ahead, Three and O2 combined would have around 2 million users in Ireland and would control about 37.5 per cent of the mobile phone market, behind Vodafone at 39.4 per cent but ahead of Meteor at just under 20 per cent.  The deal would see O2 phased out in Ireland with all customers instead being on the Three network.

Three Ireland said it had been expecting the objections and said it is confident that the deal will still get the go ahead.

“The Irish mobile market is currently characterised by one clear dominant market leader with the 3 other operators lagging behind,” a spokesperson said. “Without Three’s acquisition of O2 Ireland and the scale it can achieve, this gap will only increase”.

Three said competition in Ireland would be better served with three ‘credible’ mobile phone networks to compete for a market of 4.6 million people, rather than the current structure.

The mobile phone network said the acquisition would increase competition and bring ‘much needed investment’ to the Irish market .

Three Ireland said it is analysing the objections and will put forward proposals to address the Commission’s concerns.

Thanks to New York Times I learned about the damaging effects of some drugs that I was put on and the lawsuits in America. If only doctors could have told the truth about these drugs !

[2007] Eli Lilly agreed yesterday to pay up to $500 million to settle 18,000 lawsuits from people who claimed they had developed diabetes or other diseases after taking Zyprexa ~ http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9F00E5DB1430F936A35752C0A9619C8B63

[Not forgetting that chronic exposure to this drug causes shrinkage of the brain ~ a study funded by the company themselves]

[2009] “AstraZeneca buried unfavorable studies of its $4.4 billion blockbuster psychiatric drug Seroquel, according to internal documents released Friday in a legal dispute between the company and lawyers for thousands of people who sued the company because they said the drug caused diabetes and weight gain” ~

    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/28/business/28drug.html?_r=0

From what I’m reading at the moment Pfizer is about to take AstraZeneca over for $106 billion ? You cannot be worth that much without vulnerable “hosts” for their drugs on the ground.

I speak as someone who has been on both Seroquel and Zyprexa in the past. Both are major tranquilizers (despite the fancy names that you might hear them called). Both can be highly damaging when taken long term. I was given these drugs to try to cover up the damage done by “anti-depressant” / SSRI drugs. As for some these drugs lead to mania/”psychosis” (loss of touch with reality). For others SSRIs increase the risk of suicide and violence (refer to work of Dr Peter Breggin). I took the drug for panic and learned the hard way that the lie that these drugs “rebalance neurotransmitters” is a clever but damaging myth.

[Never stop or change prescribed drugs without talking to your doctor, due to the dangers of withdrawal]

So to sum up, I learned this through the New York Times and not from the people that should have told me $$$

Irish Medical Organisation (IMO) started to warn about Zyprexa last month even though these articles have been in NY Times in 2006 or possibly before ! How nice of them !

“Warning on side effects of drugs” ~ http://www.irishexaminer.com/ireland/warning-on-side-effects-of-drugs-for-mental-illness-266612.html

“Siobhán Barry said up to 100,000 people, “enough to fill Croke Park on any given Sunday”, are on psychotropic medications — which have been shown to cause conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol”.

Have we become a nation of drug addicts ? Just because they are prescribed doesn’t make them safer. Not forgetting that more people in this country die from prescribed Psychoactive drugs than drugs like cocaine etc

Short term use of tranquilizers can help someone who is in deep distress (eg 1 to 2 weeks depending on whether the drug suits a person or not). But most people do not need them long term. Plus they are over prescribed ie the person is given a dosage that is too high.

But to get back to my point, if people don’t learn the truth via the medical profession in a timely manner (ie not years after side effects are known) it is up to the media to educate the people with information from validated, reliable sources. After all it is the public that is the clinical trial when it comes to these drugs. Psychoactive or not. As negative trials on these drugs are sometimes hidden .

    Extract of article ~

Abramson thinks she can. “The thirst for the quality information the New York Times provides is very real and pretty unquenchable at this point,” she says. But what can the NYT offer British readers that they don’t already get? “Sophistication of analysis and news presentation that we do on a higher plane than anywhere else.”

New York Times editors don’t do modesty, Abramson no exception. She says her ambition for the paper is to become “the international provider of the highest quality news and information. That simple. It’s the best, so everyone is going to want that.”
