KPMG to check if €500k was misappropriated from Bord Gáis Eireann

A whistleblower has reportedly come forward with the information.

THE ENERGY REGULATOR will await a report from Ervia on allegations that funds were misappropriated at the former Bord Gáis Eireann before deciding on what action to take.

However, the semi-state company is remaining tight-lipped on the exact details of the investigation.

In response to a query from this website, Ervia (formerly known as Bord Gáis Eireann) said:

Ervia has retained KPMG to investigate an allegation made about a potential issue that may have arisen approximately ten years ago within Bord Gáis Eireann.

The Irish Examiner reports that a former employee has alleged that as much as €500,000 was misappropriated from local authorities in both the Republic and in Northern Ireland.

According to the paper, the whistleblower said they did not feel comfortable making the allegations until after they had left the company.

A spokesperson for the Commission for Energy Regulation said it expects to receive a report once Ervia has completed its own investigation.

“Upon receipt of  the report, CER will consider what, if any, further action to take on the matter,” they added.

Bord Gáis Éireann was rebranded as Ervia earlier this year.
