SPONSORSHIP OF THE upcoming Emerald Isle Classic is costing Irish tourism initiative The Gathering over €600,000.

They are estimating, however, that Saturday’s game is set to give a €100 million boost to Ireland’s economy.

While American viewers can see the game on CBS, ESPN are also due to show it. The television ads which promote Ireland as a tourist destination are due to reach an estimated audience of three million people.

Speaking to TheJournal.ie, Áine Kavanagh, spokesperson for The Gathering 2013, explained what being the ‘presenting partner’ actually means. “It’s a language thing,” she says. “The presenting partner entitles us to certain broadcast opportunities.”

One of these ‘broadcast opportunities’ is set to include a pre-recorded message from Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Leo Varadkar, TD.

Saturday’s game between Notre Dame and Navy is a sell-out. A pair of tickets had been on sale on eBay earlier today with a starting price of €700. No bids were made, however.

Speaking of reports that the game was set to see the busiest day ever in Dublin Airport, Paul O’Kane of the DAA told TheJournal.ie that this wasn’t the case, citing last years Europa League final as one occasion which resulted in greater numbers, where “pretty much everyone was flying in for that game”.

He did confirm, however, that this Sunday was set to be particularly busy, with approximately 85,000 people traveling through the airport.

  • From what I can tell we’ll make back that €600,000 in VAT on Guinness in Templebar this Friday night!

But we’ll still have the whiners who can’t see the wood from the trees…

    • Like we were going to get our money back from the visits of Obama and Queen Elizabeth?!

      Reply
    • The Obama visit brought in some revenue, the Queen’s visit brought in diddly squat but no one in the Tourist industry expected it to, that was just political spin.

The difference this time is that the money is already in the Irish economy. We got the buggers cash b4 the event at all through ticket sales, Aer Lingus flights and accommodation.

    • 8 thumbs down. Hotel bookings from the UK actually declined after the visit ffs. It had no impact whatsoever. How could it? Why would it?

    • while I love your optimism Winston… even if the 85000 people coming to Dublin all had 10 pints each.. the vat bill still wouldn’t be covered… be fairly close though.. that’s assuming a pint is on average ?5 and the vat rate is 13.5%

    • oh and also… this was overall a very sound investment… the 600,000 will be easily recovered and we will make money… what I don’t agree with is the over exaggerated figure of bringing in 100m which I assume takes into account future visitors who are attracted by the ads…. but even then the money the small % of people who will actually visit based on viewing this will bring in is nowhere near 10m never mind the rest….

  • A €100 million boost to the economy, from an investment of €600,000. As our American guests would say, ” way to go “. Whatever individuals are behind this initiative, deserve a collective pat on the back for their achievement.

Well the volvo ocean race gave a huge boost to galway. My best few months business wise in years.

At the 1st comments. The Queens visit transcends any debate on benefits to tourism.

  • They are going to get some return on that 600k.

Well done to the people who organized this.

  • I am down in Doonbeg for a few days break at the moment and the hotels, golf courses, restaraunts and bars are all full for the week! And who is filling them? Americans. They are here in droves spending money at Celtic tiger levels, each spending up to €800-1000 per day between meals, golf, accommodation and car rental so could we all lay off the scepticism. It’s becoming a bit sickening.

  • And yet the government refuse to sponsor the next Volvo stopover for Galway, which has already brought €190m to Galway…..

    • Galway religiously votes for FG/FF, same with most of the west, and then wonder why the Govt. ignores you.

Why would they give a bass penny to that part of the country when it will return the same political divide it has for 50 years.

      A sad truth.

    • Are you joking, Galway has been getting handouts for years. The poor wesht again

      Reply
    • Galway gets pittance handouts. Where is the railway line from Ennis to Sligo, where is the road improvement from Galway to Limerick or Galway to Athlone. Where is the focus to turn Galway in to a strategic regional hub.

All these kinds of things are of immense benefit to the national economy, especially to Dublin. Just imagine a country where everybody wasn’t trying to find jobs in the one little county that is dublin.

You would notice that quickly in your Mortgages and rent.

    • @Arjun – I’m not sure how often you travel from galway to athlone, but it’s a Phuckn motorway – you can do that trip in 11 seconds as long as you dodge the five-o!! And the only part of the western rail corridor to be built is the section in Galway.
Try driving from Dublin to Mayo, Lietrim, Sligo or Donegal, or in fact try to do anything in those counties, and you’ll see what it’s like to be a victim of underinvestment. And don’t even think about getting sick in the north west, or you’ll be deported to Galway on a bus…

    • As far as I can recall the governments decentralization plan has been slowed, if not stopped. In my humble opinion our countries infrastructure has benefited hugely from the boom, its very easy to forget how atrocious our infrastructure was 20 years ago.

Also, Arjun Deepra, nice throwaway account ;)

  • Depra… Are you getting lost somewhere ?? Galway – athlone and Galway (gort) – limerick is a motorway .. There is the investment . As for the sligo railway … That’s not in Galway !!

    • Great question! Could they not have gotten Gabriel Byrne or Liam Neeson or someone to record something? Someone well known in the US where the majority of viewers are watching from!?

  • Where do they get this crap, ” it’s going to give a €100 million boost to the economy ” last week it was the Tall ships giving the economy a boost before that it was the Ocean race in Galway. Who makes up these figures and lazy journalism putting This rubbish into every event that takes place.

  • The ocean race benefited Galway, here we have another event in Dublin. This will benefit Dublin, nowhere else.

You cannot argue with the facts, man, unless you are like those old bats who when interviewed on TV about the latest clerical scandal say “we still have some good priests”!

And you are in Doonbeg? not staying in Bottler’s holiday home by any chance?
