EIRCOM HAS ANNOUNCED a double digit fall in revenues and earnings for the year to the end of June.

Revenues for the year to the end of June fell by €174m to €1.5bn, while the company’s earnings before interest adn tax fell by €104m to €542m.

The company continued to shed retail broadband customers but the number of mobile phone customers it had grew by 4 per cent to 1,076,000.

“The performance of the business continues to decline, but this was in line with our expectations. We must do more to retain our customers, stabilise our revenues and grow our profitability” said Herb Hribar, Eircom CEO.

He said that the telecoms market is witnessing intense competition from other operators, but that the company was endeavouring to do what it could to return to fortunes.

“Eircom will do more to fight for, retain existing customers and even win back former customers,” he said.

    • Was with Eircom, my wife signed up with another provider but we were still in contract with Eircom. Next I know, we are changed over and Eircom issue a bill for €300 for breaking the contract. I contacted them & was sneered at & the best they could do was if I went back to them they might wave the fee. I contacted the new provider – UTV who were very understanding and gave me the goahead to go back to Eircom. When I contacted Eircom they said they had stopped waving the fee as it was happening so much ! Needless to say I will never go back to Eircom. Customer service my a***.

    • Wish I hadn’t read your comment John, I think the same thing might be about to happen to me, switched over to another provider, broadband 3 times faster than Eircom and unlimited calls (landline) irrespective of time of day / week, for the same amount, but then the missus said something about a contract, I told her to cop on and get back to her Tatler magazine, looks like I might have been wrong

  • It took me 3 weeks to join Meteor. Their customer service is shocking .

    • Three are far the worst I’ve ever had to deal with

    • Agreed. I was a meteor customer for years. Then after being taken over by eircom the customer service became terrible so I guess I’m one of those who left for a better service else where.

I also got rid of my eircom landline as it is very poor value for money. They seriously need to look at their attitude to their customers.

Line rental still goes to them. They still have a monopoly on this outside the urban areas.

  • When I left them to move to UPC they really sunk to a new low, the guy on the phone said that even in a power cut the land line phone will work in case of emergencies. That is correct but I told him in 14 years living here there was only one power and there were 3 mobile phones in the house!

    • They go lower than that. I’ve been informed by a person in the insider that if you ring up and ask for your account number they’ll immediately change it to a different number as soon as the call has ended knowing you probably want it to switch providers. Then when your desired new provider puts through the paper work you provide, lo and behold your account can’t be found and the switching process is delayed or cancelled. If only such ingenuity went into providing a better product or service.

  • This is pretty funny… Mainly in the context of the inane meteor pop up ad that keeps coming up on the journal app. Clearly they’re not winning any customers from it…

Yeah,I wouldn’t bother to be honest.I can’t think of one positive thing to say about this company ???
I had an Eircom rep call into me a while back. The first think I asked him was “Do Eircom still charge a line rental fee? To which he said they did.Conversion went down hill after this.I informed him I had a 30mb line(at the time)with UPC.He told me he designed websites and an 8mb was more than enough and I didn’t need a line that fast.So I asked him did it make sense for me to downgrade my line, for the same price as well as pay a line rental fee on top of that ??? Then he left!!!

If this is the level of intelligence in Eircom,it is any wonder they are losing so much money!!!!

  • Doomed company the minute there monopoly was taken away, they ripped the public off for years in the late 90′s early 00′s with 1p a min dial-up internet, even now there no conjestion 8mb broadband product is a joke when UPC can offer customers in certain area’s 150mb cable connections.

I had to laugh watching tv last night. The eircom add was on boasting about 8mb broadband. The very next add was upc boasting 150mb broadband. What idiot in eircom thinks 8mb broadband is something to boast about when their competitors are offering 150mb.

      Reply
    • Study hub advertisment is clearly aimed at parents with limited computer or internet knowledge, the whole advertisment..kid heading to texas ect to meet there online boyfriend, french nanny who could be dita von tesse ect. Blatent attempt by Eircom to frighten none tech minded parents into subscribing to there inferior service.

    • Don’t forget the ‘free’ music… they’re basing that off the hope UPC will start ratting out it’s thousands of satisfied customers… Even though UPC went to court to protect their right not to snitch.

As soon as UPC hit 90+ % coverage, Eircom’s broadband will be dead in the water. Which will probably sink their ship!

      Good riddance..

  • But what about their amazing study hub? For the love of god would somebody think of the children!!!!

Enough with the sarcasm though, one of my mates did a speed test once and was getting a dl speed of 0.37mb, their bb is a joke. UPC vs eircom tho is the equivalent of a drag race between a Lada and a Bugatti veyron.

I laugh every time I see the eircom ad, the dad is so condescending its comical!

Doesn’t surprise me. I run an IT management company. Their quality of broadband is pathetic. Its reliability is extremely poor. Their customer support is best quoted as ignorant arrogant and incompetent. I move an average of 3 business a week away from eircom every week at this stage.

“Ohh you want to port forward, well i cant do it by fixed IP , only by whats on my dhcp list, even then i still dont work at all ”

Replaced it with a decent zyxel and wow it works in 2 seconds , connection is still slow though

  • Joke of a company €54 a month for broadband. I don’t want stupid studyhub or music or a stupid landline phone with free calls that I don’t use. All I f’n want is BROADBAND & all I want to pay is €20 max per month!

The sooner 4G LTE comes and eliminates these dinosaurs from the market the better!

  • Eircom are a joke! I had ” next gen broadband ” with them for a year, was told my line supports 25mb so that’s what I paid for, every speed test I did I was getting 4-6mb. When I called they said they will drop my price but I had to pay to change package etc. 3 months after leaving them they are trying to saddle me with a €500 bill for services that I didn’t receive etc etc. IDIOTS. Needless to say I am now with Digiweb and get 8mb consistently for less money. I can’t wait till UPC extend their broadband services into Enniscorthy area so I can go with them! UPC vs EIRCOM is a non contest! Eircom will consistently lose customers as UPC services grows.

  • This is what happens when a government sells off a state monopoly and opens the market up. Eircom’s gravy train couldn’t carry all it’s overpaid, under-worked, unionised staff any more.

The share of the company owned by the employees (the ESOT) also voted for every takeover deal that gave them a cash payout regardless of what it meant for the good of the company. Now they own shares worth nothing and that’s all they deserve.
Funny how these union types who cry and whinge about “asset stripping” are soon to be found with their snouts deeper in the trough than anyone else……Is that Karma?

  • Eircom’s broadband days are over unless they can actually compete with UPC in terms of technology & speed

8mb broadband these days is a joke. its unfortunate for those people who cant get UPC service as of yet

Also in relation to home phones, the younger generation dont bother with a house phone anymore, only another bill to pay!

  • Just switched over to Vodafone at €29 a month as opposed to Eircom’s €54 a month. I have broken the Eircom’s 12 month contract and can’t wait for them to come looking for a break contract fee, considering Eircom broke the contract day one by promising me 8mb and constantly only delivering 2/3mb. The guy on Vodafone told me that my line could only support up to 5mb and that Ercom should have told me that day one. Bunch of incompetent muppets. Looks like most of the country are voting with their feet and walking away from Eircom.

  • Bought EIRCOM BB for in 2010.
    Promised up to MBs.
    Got less than 1.
    Couldn’t even watch YouTube.
Customer support foreign national suggested the problem might be too much electrical interference from toasters, microwaves etc. FFS!!!
Had to get UPC in to have broadband,
EIRCOM had me by the shorts however on a one year contract.
Had to pay them for a year without them providing a service.
Took an age to get rid of eircom them even after 12 months – not acknowledging written cancelation etc.
Never, ever, ever will I go near that company.
The biggest bunch of c u next Tuesdays ever!!!

  • I was with ifa telcom good company to deal with but I wanted more than the so called 1mbs of speed. I was so stupid to believe the “get up to 8mbs of speed” what a mistake 1 customer service is well I could not type a comment on that dept.2 the complains dept. don’t know how to answer a phone that is because the customer is broken down by the customer service dept. and hence nobody rings that dept 3 the Tec dept. well are trained to lie to you but if you push them enough they will talk the truth and that is that the majority of people in Ireland cannot get more than 1mb of speed into there home because the cable on your property is only able to handle 1mb go out on the public rd. and eircom will give you 24mbs of speed. long story short I got out of my 12 month contract got money back from eircom and left them after 6 months the day I disconnected my landline I got a call from eircom pleading with me not to leave and that they would give me free landline if I stayed with them. I said no and proceeded to disconnect the landline that was the best day of my life I am now with Nova networks in cork I get 8mbs and wireless phone for less than eircom with a great back up service

My neighbours have fixed line broadband but eircom can’t be bothered putting a proper line to my house, only a carrier line so I am paying for a landline for the phone and to 3 for a dodgy NBS ‘broadband’ , it’s a complete joke.

  • Best broadband I saw in Dublin was Magnet then UPC. There are couple other good I heard of too, but not as speedy as these two. I also have Eircom line in the office and works perfect, speed is always at max no downtimes etc. So I suppose eircom experience depends where you live and what is the condition of the wires linked up to your estate.
