Dunnes and Aldi make biggest gains in Christmas grocery market

The latest figures from Kantar Worldpanel show Dunnes and Aldi making ground, largely at the expense of smaller shops.

DUNNES STORES and Aldi saw the biggest gains of any supermarkets in the Christmas shopping market – increasing their share at the expense of smaller outlets, new figures show.

Data published by Kantar Worldpanel shows the two chains enjoying a significant increase in their share of the grocery market for the Christmas 2012 period, compared to the equivalent period in 2011.

Dunnes increased its market share from 23.9 per cent to 24.3 per cent, while Aldi grew its share from 4.7 per cent to 6.0 per cent – overtaking its discount rival Lidl in the process, the first time it has done so.

Tesco remained the most popular supermarket chain in the 12 weeks running up to Sunday 23 December, maintaining its share at 27.8 per cent, while Dunnes’ share of 24.3 per cent cements its second-place status.

Both SuperValu and Superquinn saw their share of the market fall by 0.3 per cent when compared to the equivalent 12-week period of 2011; SuperValu’s share of the market is now 10.5 per cent, while Superquinn’s is 5.1 per cent, making it the smallest of the six main supermarket chains in Ireland.

Aldi’s year-on-year gain is the highest of any supermarket; its 1.3 per cent increase equates to a 30 per cent increase in sales on a year-on-year basis.

Lidl’s share meanwhile grew by 0.1 per cent to 5.9 per cent.

Kantar’s figures also showed that the grocery market grew by 0.3 per cent between the two Christmas seasons, slightly offsetting the losses made by SuperValu and Superquinn.

Who is still biting in tesco? They are ripping off the Irish customer. Never publish pre-tax profits for this country. Aldi has a great selection and you can fill a shopping basket for very little money. Many families are struggling and if it wasn’t for lidi or aldi many couldn’t afford to eat. A carton of cranberry juice in supervalu 1.45, aldi just 89 cent. Shampoo same brand in supervalu 1.45 aldi 99 cent. With price differences such as these you are getting 50% more for your money. Don’t be fooled by dunnes, tescos, and supervalu. There is very little difference in the quality of the production but alot in your wallet!!!!!

I get some things in Aldi/Lidl but their range is tiny compared to Dunnes/Tesco and if you choose carefully the large supermarkets match their prices on many items. Add in the fact anyone with a Dunnes club card received vouchers offering big discounts each week for the 8 weeks to Xmas and that probably accounts for the increase in market share.

Shopping in Lidl and Aldi on a big scale is fine if you drive, but if you don’t, the likes of Tesco and Superquinn have delivery options that are much handier.

It basically comes down to how much you are willing to spend.

We recently started shopping in Aldi and have had an excellent experience. Their selection of products is excellent, we rarely have to go else where for additional items.
Most visits we leave with >70% of our basket made up of quality Irish products, at a better price than Tesco’s imports.

As a nation, we are being ripped off. Although Aldi and Lidl have brought us excellent product with huge savings, their margins here are 9-25% higher than mainland EU and UK across product ranges and hence the continuous expansion plans of both retailers here. Ireland offers a margin opportunity unattainable in many other countries because greedy Dunnes, Tesco, Musgraves/Supervalu and the small friendly local rip-off grocer has screwed us for decades!

It’s interesting to look behind the sometimes strangely named brands at the German discounters, many are from small Irish producers, this must be lauded….

Many are also from large Irish brands, Lidl use ollhausan’s for all their pork and cappa Quinn for their chickens. The majority of it is just rebranded.

I only know of the rebranding for Aldi, but their Irish Blue Cheese is the fantastic Cashel Blue and their premium yogurts are from Irish Country Yogurts in West Cork and they are delicious!

The absolute worst offender for not stocking Irish produce is marks & spencer. All their meat products are British Ham,Beef,Chicken etc.

However it is well known that their company policy is that, where possible, products are sourced within the UK.
Even their “Irish” products are all produced in Northern Ireland.

I’d say Aldi & Lidl cover about 85% of what we buy in supermarkets. About the only thing we don’t buy there is meat as we go to our local butcher for that.

I love aldi. Their healthy food is around half the price of Tesco and Dunnes-nuts,berries etc. Plus their dark chocolate is to die for.

I think the Dunnes increase could be due to the vouchers they sent out for money off a certain spend.

Tesco is a rip off, have to laugh at! some of their marketing ploys. An item was on the shelf and was priced matched to Aldi, disappeared for two weeks and came back as ¿NEW? according to the shelf price sticker but 50% more expensive than before (definitely not matched to Aldi anymore)….
