A DUNDALK HOME technology company has been named National Champion in the 2014/2015 European Business Awards.
Climote allows users to control their home heating straight from their phone, and is billed as a rival to Nest, the US home technologies company that was purchased by Google earlier this year for $3.2 billion (€2.47 billion).
The start-up’s win comes off the back of landing a major contract with energy giant ScottishPower, one of the so-called ‘Big Six’ energy suppliers in the UK. Climote saw off competition from around the world to win the tender.
On top of the deal with ScottishPower, Climote has secured partnerships with Electric Ireland and Power NI.
The company, which was started by Derek Roddy and Eamon Conway, will now go on to fight for the overall European prize next year.
Describing the product, Roddy said; “With the climote HUB people are able to control their home heating from anywhere, via one click programme.”

The Nest thermostat has a lot more features though. Algorithm that learns your behaviour and creates it’s own schedule thus saving you money. Auto away motion detectors that detect if someone is there or not saving you cash. Plus it’s sexier. Fair play for the Irish entrepreneurship though climate is still cool
I’m sure in time they will add more features. Love hearing stories like this – proves that with hard work anything is possible

No doubt Management will expand its service offering in time, after a few more large-scale sales contracts are tied up.
Nest isn’t compatible with many HVAC systems and has destroyed a number of customers systems with constant cycling. It doesn’t really learn you patterns that well and only really makes sense in a American home with central air/cooling which is left on most of the time. It’s terribly inefficient for a European home which is far more parsimonious with the heating than Americans.
Climote with IFTTT integration to allow geo-fencing would be perfect.
Climote needs to drop the subscription service and use people’s wifi like best and other similar devices
