It is about to get a whole lot more expensive to stay in Dublin hotels

But there will still be plenty of pricier places to holiday in Europe.

DUBLIN IS EXPECTED to have the fastest-rising hotel room prices among major European cities both this year and the next.

A report from PwC predicted the capital’s average daily room rate would hit €102 in 2015 and increase further to €109 in 2016 – putting prices back on par with their 2007 peaks.

A lack of new building meant occupancy rates rose to 78% last year, the fourth-highest in Europe, which is past the previous record set in 2006.

No new hotels are expected to open in the city this year, although some are increasing capacity through extensions and other works.

But Dublin remains a long way outside the most expensive cities across Europe, ranking only 13th on the list of pricey destinations for this year.

In comparison, the average rate in Europe’s dearest city, Paris, is expected to hit €257 per night this year – up from €252 in 2014.

Here are the most-expensive destinations for 2015, according to PwC’s forecasts:

‘A star performer’

PwC Ireland’s Jennifer Gillen said Dublin was a “star performer” in Europe for hotel owners, based on the extra money they were now making from each room.

Dublin continues to offer good value for visitors, with rooms considerably cheaper than European cities such as Paris, London, Rome, Amsterdam, Barcelona – it is important that we continue to stay competitive and offer good value,” she said.

However the report also noted hotels were facing increased threats from a range of competitors, from home-sharing websites like Airbnb to “new-style hostels”.

In said in one of the most costly hotel markets, Geneva, the stock of Airbnb properties had hit 16% of the city’s total available rooms and they were competing directly with hoteliers.

In Ireland, the Revenue Commissioners recently clarified its position that local Airbnb hosts were liable for tax on their rental income. One host told TheJournal.ie the move would discourage people from making rooms available on the site, further pushing up prices in the city.

We are going to Spain in two months for a week
Total price for the week including flights and hotel is €510 for two adults
For argument sake I just looked up the same week to stay in Dublin
€680 and that’s with no flights if u are coming from overseas
Then your crazy Dublin drink prices and everything else that goes with it.
Cheaper to spend a week in Spain than it is to spend a week an hours drive from me

As a Corkman who lived in Dublin for 6 years, you’re not comparing like with like.

Why do my wife and I sometimes choose a 1000 euro 3 day city break in Europe when we could get a package holiday for the same money?

Why do I sometimes spend up to 100 euro on a match ticket when I’d see more of the game on TV? Why do I go to the pub for the next match and spend 50 euro when I could drink a few bottles for a tenner?

Why do I pay 100 euro to go to a concert when I can listen to CDs for free.

The answer is that different experiences appeal to different people, that a shared experience can sometimes be better than an individual experience, and that city experiences can be very different and offer a whole lot more variety. I don’t like sitting by the pool for the day, or on the beach. I get extremely restless and bored, and I can’t even read a book or surf the net for too long without needing to get up and do something.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not disparaging a sun holiday for a second. They have their place in terms of R&R and I go on them from time to time. Nor am I suggesting Dublin is better than other European cities. All I’m saying is that it offers a somewhat unique (if expensive) product to tourists, and lots of people I meet abroad speak fondly of their visit. It’s always a rip-off, in local terms, no matter where you go. Anyone outside London will bemoan London prices, a Czech person wouldn’t dream of paying tourist prices in a square in Prague. Your capital will always appear expensive relative to your own local experiences.

    You’ve also the weather factor
A week in Dublin or a week in Spain for much cheaper than it is to stay in Ireland.
Ireland is for tourists and not for the Irish
They try promote “staycations” but with these prices you’d be silly

Celtic Tiger. I think it could more fairly be called the CREDIT Tiger. It was time in Ireland where people really believed that debt was actually wealth ! Anyway the reason why property demand ‘seems’ to be on the up trend, and as a consequence a new homeless crisis, is due to unlawful immigration via EU. Because of the fear of political correctness berating/bully gang, people are afraid to say it out loud. Allowing Families to be come homeless, seems to be an acceptable collateral damage, for allowing Brussels to run the puppet government in Ireland.

Some Politicians are making people believe that giving landlords more money by upping the Rent Cap(rent allowance) will fix the problem(Like feeding a pack of wolves)! And where would the money to give to greedy landlords come from? Yes, of course more tax pits !!! The EU is killing Ireland faster than the British empire was killing Ireland in 1915.

If I have left something out then let me know. Hotels are expensive but to say there is nothing to see that is just pure ignorance.

Dublin is home to most of the national musuems, historical sites, botanical gardens, Christ Church, Dublin castle, Phoenix Park, St. Annes Park, North Bull Island conservation, Dublin Zoo Guinness brewery, biggest venues like Croke Park and 3 Arena. It contains transport to nearly every location in Ireland that a tourist may want to go, massive concentration of young people and in turn nightlife, gigs, theatre etc etc,

To all the tourists, visit Dublin, it can be pricey but well worth it for a couple days at least, and don’t forget the rest of the country has plenty more to offer on top of that at generally lower cost.

The real beauty of Ireland starts in new grange and glendalough down to waterford cork across to clare and up to Galway sligo and donegal across to Belfast.

The same greed that brought this country down will bring it down again.
The banks have seen recapitalisation from property price increases fuelled by “investment” property speculation and the service sector looks on with glee as they contemplate a “return to the boom”.

The only people who feel pain are the lower paid and nothing is going to change that. Ireland has become a middle-class Disneyland fuelled by a slave class, and the Labour Party are proud of their achievements?

Global Debt has doubled since 2007. Any guesses what that means?
