Dell is now the largest company to accept payments in Bitcoin

The computer giant’s CEO Michael Dell made the announcement on Twitter.

COMPUTER GIANT DELL is now the largest e-commerce company to accept payments using the virtual currency Bitcoin.

CEO Michael Dell made the announcement on Twitter last week.

The company, which had a turnover of almost $57 billion (€42 billion) last year, is the latest in a wide range of organisations to begin accepting the payment.

It will be working with Coinbase to provide the service.

Ireland’s Central Bank has erred on the side of caution when it comes to crypto-currencies.

Just last week, the Central Bank issued a notice that the European Banking Authority (EBA) is recommending that financial authorities actively discourage institutions from trading in the currencies.

“Consumers should note that virtual currencies remain unregulated, thus there remains no regulatory protections for consumers when holding, buying or selling virtual currencies,” the statement from the Central Bank read.

Minister for Finance Michael Noonan said earlier this year that the Revenue Commissioners are actively monitoring the situation to ensure that the currency is not being used to ‘circumvent taxes’.

While it should be noted that this applies to US customers only for now, this is great news.

In fact, Dell seems to be actively promoting Bitcoin by offering discounts on selected products, thereby passing some of the benefits of using Bitcoin as a payment method (almost no fees) vs. credit cards etc. on to the customer.

Hopefully this will be extended to Dell.ie too – I’m planning on upgrading my system soon.

Translation – we might lose out on money if people start using virtual currencies, but let’s make it look like we give a sh*t about consumers!

    1. No thanks virtual Monopoly money destined to crash aside, I need the American Express points. I’m saving them up for first class Asia to New York trip…

    2. What consumer buys a Dell, what is it 2009? Even the people holding out against Apple don’t buy Dell PCs anymore…. Piece of unupgradable, dell only parts, something’s broken but nobody knows what indicator lights, buy the extended warentee because we designed it to break after 6 weeks garbage
