Cyber Monday shoppers urged to know their rights

The NCA says there are certain risks with online shopping, particularly the non-delivery of goods or if consumers wish to return an item.

TODAY IS CYBER Monday – one of the busiest online shopping days of the year. It falls on the last Monday of November after the American holiday, Thanksgiving and their subsequent shopping frenzy day, Black Friday.

This year, Irish shoppers are expected to spend around €420 million on online gifts during the period with the average consumer spending about €227 online for Christmas, according to figures published by Visa Europe.

For the occasion, a number of online retailers have ramped up their deals to get shoppers to click on their websites by starting sales at midnight.

The date shows how Irish people’s shopping habits are evolving during the holiday shopping season, a time when stores can make up to 40 per cent of their annual revenue.

But Cyber Monday hasn’t always been the biggest online shopping day, up until three years ago, that title was earned by the last day shoppers could order items with standard shipping rates and get them delivered before Christmas. That day changes every year, but usually falls in late December.

Busiest day

The National Consumer Agency (NCA) received almost 1,350 queries relating to shopping online this year, mainly relating to faulty goods, goods not being delivered, returning goods, and what consumers should do if they change their mind. On the busiest day of online shopping, they are calling on consumers to know their rights.

Karen O’Leary, Director of Public Awareness and Financial Education, has this advice:

Consumers have a seven-day cooling off period in most cases from the date the item was delivered to cancel the order and return the product. Consumers should be mindful that if the reason for returning it is just because they don’t like the product, it is up to them to pay for the goods to be returned.

In order that consumers don’t waste their hard earned cash and avoid the disappointment of goods not arriving on time for Christmas, we would urge consumers to check for expected delivery dates, shipping and handling fees, warranties, return policies and any other key information which may affect them. It is also a good idea to do an online search for companies that you don’t recognise to see if there are any negative references. It is important that consumers know their rights and what solutions are available to them, in case something goes wrong.

  • I have been dealing with Amazon online both in the UK and USA for over 10 years and I have to say I never had any problem with an order ! To be safe people should stick to well recognised sites!

    • Amazon is good, only problem i have with amazon is you don’t find out till the very end that what you want to buy, is able to be sent to Ireland. That really annoys the hell out of me.

    • @ bosh , you are incorrect, amazon uk will post more or less anything to ireland as long as they have it in stock and if your order costs more than 25 pounds sterling they will deliver for free , other companies sell their stuff through amazon and not all of these deliver outside of the uk and this is where the problem arises, however , if you are searching for stuff you should refine your search to include things eligible for super saver delivery , which helps but then other stuff not eligible for free delivery ( because it is not amazon but a third party selling the item) can be delivered to Ireland but will incur delivery charges , so the point is that shopping on amazon takes some getting used to ….

      ponythegringo, err actually you are incorrect,.

      Amazon won’t ship any item to Ireland which they consider hazmat…this has nothing to do with third party sellers or anything. Other items such as large tv’s also can’t be shipped to Ireland.

      The following items can be delivered to addresses within the UK only:

      Medicines and pharmaceuticals
      All baby food, milk, and drinks
      Perfumes (mainland UK only)

      Light bulbs cannot be delivered to the Republic of Ireland.

      ponythegringo, you can of course still use parcel motel for small packages and for larger items like TV’s you can always use deliverme.ie to get them to Ireland :)

    • Yes can be so annoying. Amazon should put a SHIP TO section with the product description. Surely can’t be too hard to do.

    Best customer experience I’ve ever experienced was with http://www.shaving.ie , was sent the wrong item by mistake and the response and solution was very surprising and I was very impressed.

    I’ve been buying stuff online since the mid 90′s and have to say I’ve not been conned/scammed yet despite thousands and thousands of purchases, You just have to use common sense

  • As it’s Cyber Monday here are some tech stores I’ve had great experience with more than once… Scan computers in the uk is fantastic for deliveries & pricing 2 days max w/ DPD also with a very good RMA service too… Overclockers uk is another with easy no hassle shopping good offers weekly and both stores support paypal have twitter/facebook profiles for FAQ.. also they can both undercut Amazon in price on occasion.Tried & trusted.
    Best RMA (returns) experience is Amazon’s with instant refunds …it allows you to get straight back online get a replacement shipped before you send the broken one back. Worst shipping delay suffered was Amazon too but using their 3rd party seller which I don’t recommend when something goes wrong it can be up to a month of frustration in cases.
