Significant planning and research had to be undertaken ahead of the inaugural visit of the 333 metre MSC Splendida earlier this year – up to that point, it was the largest vessel ever to berth in the port.
One of the ships arriving today is just three metres shy of that length: the 330 metre Royal Princess. Elsewhere, the Celebrity Silhouette is 319m long, the MV Horizon is 208m and the Magellan is 222m long.
Like the MSC Splendida, both the ‘Princess’ and the ‘Silhouette’ had to reverse into the port in a complex manoeuvre coordinated by Harbour Master David Dignam and the port’s pilots, assisted by tugs Shackleton and Beaufort.
According to Dublin Port:
Cruise ship arrivals typically deliver a €100 per passenger spend, meaning an economic boost of €1.3million for the city today. These ships’ passengers originate primarily from the United States of America, France and Great Britain.

Actually Mark, boats provide bus transfers, creating employment for drivers and coach companies. The day trips from the boats go to many places such as powerscourt, Bru Na Baine, Slane, national stud and many other locations
Wayne, a €1.3m spend is always a great injection to the local community. You might have just missed that my original comment is a little tongue in cheek.
Martin over 90% of those disembarking take a day trip, the key word is “average” plenty of research and stats about what cruise tourism brings to Ireland
This is more of the enormous FG/Labour conspiracy to try to make out things are improving.
If you go down to the docks there are no cruise liners. They have simply doctored these images to fool people.
I refuse to stop being miserable.
Life is as bad as ever.
Wont’ pay, can’t pay!
Don’t be kidding yourself that people from cruise liners spend a fortune in the City Centre.. I pick up a fair few of them in my Taxi and a good majority complain how expensive the city is.. A woman recently told me she had been in a few cities before Dublin and she was shocked how expensive Dublin was. Said the only monet she spent was on the taxi and a cup of coffee.. Plus cruises are all inclusive, people fill up bags with food supplied by the ship before they head out for the day..
David try getting out of the taxi and walking along Nassau street. Most will have purchased a small memento of Dublin, most will stood for a coffee or a beer
Taxi up and down the Quays Mark 15 each way 30 Euro for 2 People. Pint each 5 Euro, 15 Euro max for each breakfast. im at 70 Euro Total Mark. I dont know how you managed to get 200 Euro for a couple ? When thats quite frankly a lie.
Not before they are pick pocketed by Roma gangs who it was reported specifically target tourists as they likely won’t return for a court date if caught.
It’s nothing to do with being a victim, personally I have no problem telling an addict where to go, but when a tourist who comes here with barely any English gets harassed by these people it can be quite scary for them, and in turn paints a very bad picture of our capital city for them.
Maybe it’s just me but I live in one of the “roughest” areas in the city centre but I see a lot of undesirables harassing tourists for money, have never seen them getting violent. But hey opinions and a-holes and all that.
I’m embarrassed to have these tourists come into this part of Dublin. If tourism Ireland want to have any repeat customers in the future and not just bad press I’d be seriously linking with the Gards, Dublin city council, Luas security etc to ensure the safety of these tourists. Luas straight into the middle of O’Connell street from the Port…sitting ducks!
Do they get free time to roam around the city or get a Luas back up to the ship? would they possibly wander towards O’Connell street at some stage where we saw an incident of a Welsh tourist attacked within 2 hours of his arrival the other week? Luas or not our national thoroughfare is surrounded by obvious dangers. My main point, in case you missed it, is this. Our representatives need to do far more to protect not just the people of Dublin but also ensure continuity of good prosperous tourism like this. Is that a terrible thing to ask for?
I would actually say the security of the city for all users, residents and visitors is important. Dublin is not unique in having crime and the targeting of tourists, be it Barcelona, or Paris there are areas that present a greater danger to visitors.
My concern would be that you think O’Connel street is the premier street in Dublin & the DCC pretending it is too! Nassaue street gets a far higher number of tourists on a daily basis
It certainly is important, I’m glad you’re seeing the actual point now, eventually, but are we meant to think because Barcelona, Paris etc. have high crime rates for tourists that it’s somehow ok for it to happen in Dublin too? If something can be done to ensure the security of tourists it obviously should be and the Gards, tourism Ireland etc need to link up to make this happen. O’Connell street is a danger (and the main thoroughfare – read a book) among other hot spots and something needs to be done, simple as!
“Read a book” try to remain mature and Maintain some class. O’Connel street is the main thoroughfare in DCC and people’s imagination. It’s decline in the 80′s has never been reversed and now streets such around the creative quarter are the main tourist areas ( as trinity, national library, museum etc) are all in close proximity.
No matter how hard you try crime will be an issue, even in city’s like Zurich Langstrasse in places is not dissimilar to O’Connel streets level of risk
Great for Dublin but (not to be a party pooper) but is this actually a case of poor scheduling and potentially not so great for the tourists themselves?
Dublin port are employing staff to give each disembarking passenger a free gash to the head, with complementary stitches, this will mean they are less likely to be assaulted once on Dublin streets, and are free to roam without being assaulted by some junkie and/or by a person with 40 previous convictions but is just from a broken home so is grand like..
They will also receive a free voucher for a pint of the black stuff from Ireland’s favourite British multinational, Diageo!
It is ironic that while cruise liners are bringing foreign visitors to our shores, Irish navy ships are gathering migrants from the sea to bring them to Italy. Would it not be better if Irish navy ships could be employed giving day trips to visitors around Cork harbour or Dublin Bay.
Chris, plenty of tour company’s offer that service, like Dublin bay cruises etc.
Our navy is on a humanitarian mission in the Mediterranean, an excellent use of its limited and underfunded resources , to help our fellow humans in suffering
I can just see a cruise liner pulling up in Westmeath…
More seriously, these liners do call into other ports around Ireland. Despite the plethora of cruise ship in Dublin stories in The Journal, it’s probably bigger business in Cobh than in Dublin. Other places that see liners come in are Galway, Bantry and Dunmore East, plus Derry and Belfast in The North.
It is great to see tourists coming to Ireland, if only the government would agree to spend more money on making rural Ireland more sustainable for tourism.. Greenways are an obvious attraction in all counties and need further development.
and no I’m not knocking this happening in Dublin but it would be good to see efforts to make other ports bigger to accommodate cruise ships like the smaller ones mentioned in this article..
