Construction activity eases slightly, but suppliers are now hiking their prices

The recovery continued to be centred on housing and commercial activity.

NEW FIGURES REVEAL a slight easing in the rapid increase of activity in the construction sector.

However, suppliers are now taking advantage of the sector’s massive growth, with input cost inflation rising sharply.

The figures, from the Ulster Bank Construction Purchasing Mangers’ Index, shows that activity has declined slightly to an index of 60.2 in May, only slightly down from April’s near record high of 63.5.

The recovery continued to be centred on housing and commercial activity, with both areas posting substantial rises again,” the bank’s Chief Economist Simon Barry said.

“There was some welcome news with regards to civil engineering activity, which decreased at the slowest pace since the end of 2007.”

He said that the data “re-affirms” that sector is on the mend with business sentiment, which has fluctuated since late 2010, showing another rise.

“Another notable aspect of the latest data was a sharp acceleration of cost inflation,” Barry added, “amid reports that suppliers have started to raise their charges in response to strengthening demand for inputs.”

Are we talking about Ireland here, what construction boost, business is dead dead did I mention dead ? Any jobs coming in for pricing are being priced at early 90′s prices!
We need the gov to get their elected ass’s in gear.
If they threw a small portion of what they gave the bankers into residential construction it would easy the property bubble and get Ireland working again.
Put an incorrupt licence or regulation system in place to keep the cowboys out and stifle the black economy in the sector.
I do not see why Nama has been and needs to pay former developers as they do and for what, exactly?

I don’t see the Italians putting Captain Schettino of the Costa Concordia in charge if their navy anytime soon !
Bet he wishes he was in Ireland, he would gave got fired with a severance bonus and then rehired after a year with a pay increase.

As someone who worked in constuction for years untill i changed careers,i have to say that working for irish in this industry is an eye opener compared to working in europe or canada, full of wiseguys paying peanuts, and doing poor standards of work and getting away with it,people then paying 400,000 for piss poor houses with the cheapest utilitys thrown in,i dont know whos worse, the dicks building them or the fools buying them

The industry isn’t down at all, the rate of expansion has slowed a tiny bit. Industry inflation is a good thing really. Most were bidding at a loss on projects to keep the cashflow going, eventually they have to start making profits.

Am I missing something here? shouldn’t civil engineering be one of those things that’s mandatory within the building industry?

Civil engineering would be the likes of motorways, bridges, water treatment plants etc. Structures that people don’t live in or work in. Civil engineers on the other hand, design and lay out most structures.

The builders are ripping off the public. They are also ripping off the workers at the same time. No opportunities for young people leaving school, no qualified crafts people, no terms and conditions, no nothing. Workers will have to declare themselves self employed to get a job. Not self employed=no job. No one will be taken off the dole in this upsurge of building activity.
