Construction climbs 11.5 per cent in 2013

Growth static in fourth quarter but big jump in annual statistics

NEW FIGURES RELEASED by the Central Statistics Office show that building and construction activity increased by 11.5 per cent in the year to December 2013.

Output in the sector was static from the third to the fourth quarter of last year. The annual increase was split between a gain of 8.4 per cent in residential building and 6.8 per cent in non-residential building.

The data released by the CSO also show that there was growth in numbers employed in the construction sector during 2013 for the first time since 2007. However, house completions were down year on year by 187, and remain at a depressed level of 8,301.

House commencements increased from 4,042 to 4,708.
