THE ECONOMIST WHO carried out a review into the sale of State assets has been appointed to the board of one of them, the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA).

Colm McCarthy, an economics lecturer at University College Dublin, has been appointed to the board by the Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar along with business advisor and former Bord Gais chief executive Gerry Walsh and aircraft leasing expert John Lynch.

It follows the recent appointment of Padraig O’Riordain as Chairman of the DAA Board.

McCarthy headed the review group which looked into the potential sale of State Assets. It reported last year that there should be no fire sale of assets in the current market but recommended a planned programme of selling to contribute to debt reduction.

He has previously worked at the Central Bank, the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) and with DKM Economic Consultants.

Walsh is a former CEO of Bord Gais and member of the outgoing DAA board as well as former chairman of the Cork Airport Authority.

Lynch is described by the Department of Transport as a “senior figure in aircraft leasing”. He is the head of the European and African marketing operations at aircraft leasing company BBAM and is managing director at its Zurich office.

“Minister Varadkar expressed his appreciation that three persons with such a range of talents and experiences have agreed to serve on the Board of the DAA, and said he looked forward to working with them, their colleagues on the DAA Board and the DAA’s executives in the period ahead,” a statement from the Department of Transport said.

DAA chief executive Declan Collier is stepping down from his role in April to take up an equivalent post at London City Airport.

  • No shame with Fine Gael, jobs for the boys and jobs to keep others quite.

Why can’t these jobs be advertised and the best candidate get the job

  • It seems strange that Mr. Mc carthy be appointed to a board that he carried out a review on. Is that a conflict of interest. What happens down the road if anything goes wrong with the board. He would be better off to stay neutral.

Typical political stroke – buy off your harshest critics with cushy jobs funded by the tax payer.

    • So do I pagan. They’ve said more than that… Interesting that O’Leary and McCarthy mentioned together. They’re like peas in a pod. Only question is which man despises the Irish people more. The contempt both seem to have for us is unparalleled. Actually you can add the McDowell brothers to that…

    • As much chance of that as Leo varadkar welcoming Eamonn couglin on to the F G ticket in west dublin

    • Reada, Just curious, who are your modern day Irish heroes, in the context of business and politics I mean. Typically, you’ll probably say none; those selfish capitalists only care about their own selfish interest (which is partly true) yet fail you will fail to recognise the role of the entrepreneur in creating jobs and wealth which in turn is redistributed through the welfare state via the tax system. You hate O ‘Leary even though he employs thousands of people in this country, pays all of his tax in this country. Now a lot of what he says is crazy I’ll give you that but he puts his money where his mouth and actually quite frequently points out some uncomfortable truths. McCarthy is a qualified economist that understands international markets and the general business environment, is he too qualified, is not the lack of qualification the very issue we all have with state appointments? I can only assume that Bertie Aherne must be your hero, you can say what you want but he is the man the increased social welfare, drove the multiple rounds of bench marking, and massively increased public sectors numbers?? All while he was courting big business, now you’ll say you hate him for the latter but that doesn’t wash; he should be your idol because he increased public expenditure to the pint that he has bankrupted the country

    • The country would fall apart within a year of O’Leary coming to charge. He is a great business man, but lets not turn the country in to a complete hub.

@tensing. Reada thinks the government should just plant big money trees and dish it out to everyone equally. But. It keeps her happy so leave her off

    • Good man begrudgery i think that is the only plan. Michael o leary would definately have a plan.

  • great jobs for the boys I didn’t realise that as well as being an economic expert, he is also now an aviation expert, what sort of qualifications do you need to get on these quangos? I hope at least he manages to point out the fact that to fly from Belfast to London is about 80% cheaper than making the same flight from Dublin.

  • O Ye of little faith. These are unpaid board appointments. I would like to see some contributors to this Journal informing yourselves before making silly comments. We are very lucky to have citizens of the calibre of Colm McCarthy stepping up to the plate and making a practical contribution to see that things are done right. Comments such as leeching, fatted calves and strokes have nothing to do with this appointment. I suspect the same contributors wouold accuse the late Mother Theresa of robbing the poor.

  • Mr. Mc Carthy is a good Economist . I think he will have to abide by the rules of the board of Dublin Airport. It will be a team effort not just what one man may think.

  • Very strange appointment. You might say a conflict of interests. You might also say, however, that McCarthy has been drafted in to do a job. No better man.

  • McCarty is no bodies fool and I believe he will contribute in a positive way let’s wait and see before we judge him

  • O ye of little faith! This is an unpaid appointment and Colm McCarthy would be invited by the Minister to participate on the board. It would be better if some contributors to this journal informed themselves before making silly comments. We are lucky to have a citizen of the calibre of McCarthy prepared to step up to the plate and take a hand to get things right albeit on the board of the DAA. Comments such as leeching, fatted calves and screwing the working class have nothing to do with this appointment. Remember some of the ‘working class’ are employed with the DAA. I would feel very comfortable if I had Colm McCarthy on the board of my company. Some of the commentators to this article would also accuse the late Mother Theresa of robbing the poor.

  • Might not be so happy as an employee of DAA when it’s sold off and some private entity comes in to restructure and cut costs. Give me a break. Mc is going in to get it ready for market and keep him quite about everything else. There is always payment in kind available in this country. He will get paid somehow. We’re in Ireland.

  • Mc Carthy hasn’t a notion about transport. Didn’t he say that electrifying howth to bray for the dart was a bad idea or wouldn’t work and he reckoned the Lias was a bad idea. Both have proven their worth!!

  • Finally, someone intelligent makes it onto a board!

Hope he shakes things up there.

  • Simple solution sell all Irish airports except Dublin and Cork and leave a small regional airport in the Donegal or Sligo area for access to areas where transport lacks. The DAA should be disbanded its a black hole. My mate left a job there a few months ago and he said its a joke they havent a clue what their doing and just waste waste waste.
