A SMALL TOWN in Mayo will become Ireland’s first fibre town as all businesses become connected to fibre broadband.
Open access network operator enet is currently building the first ‘Fibre to the Business’ (FTTB) network in Claremorris, which will see AirSpeed Telecom offering 250Mb/s (31.25MB/s) broadband to local businesses.
The service is part of a €500,000 investment in broadband infrastructure in the town and will bring fibre directly into every business in the town, ensuring that all businesses are free from bandwidth bottlenecks.
It also replaces the traditional copper networks used for broadband services, which means speeds advertised through the service will be guaranteed rather than the ‘up to’ claims made by service providers over copper networks.
Construction of the new network has commenced and is expected to be completed by August. More than 50 per cent of local businesses have subscribed to the services delivered over the network.
The initiative will be launched later today by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny and the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources Pat Rabbitte.
In a statement, Minister Rabbitte said the development is important for creating jobs and such infrastructure will help improve Ireland’s competitiveness in the global market.
I am pleased to hear that enet is considering the possibility of creating further fibredirect towns among other cities and towns with Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs). This is the kind of infrastructural investment that Ireland needs to foster digital entrepreneurship and increase competitiveness.
enet currently manages an advanced fibre optic network, which allows it to deliver high-speed communications and information services, such as broadband, in 94 towns and cities throughout Ireland.
The company holds the concession to manage, maintain and operate two phases of the country’s MAN programme.

Comparing fibre/DSL to mobile is not fair.
Hopefully it can provide a boost to the town. 1/3 of business was lost in the downturn and walk down main street in Claremorris and you will see many white washed windows and vacant stores. A theme sadly repeated in many Irish towns.

its fibre backbone connected to a slow copper network. With congestion and bandwidth problems poor contention ratios cannot guarantee the speeds they claim they can provide. Fibre direct from home to hub will be able to deliver what it claims.

The article should be changed. It’s the first town to get FTTP (Fibre to the premises). eircom has already rolled out its FTTC (fibre to the cabinet) and UPC has fibre powered cable broadband!

Anothrr waste of time and money anyone remember the man’s (metropolitan area networks) from about 10 years ago ? Our town has one but nobody ever connected in because it there wasnt any backbone connection out. Hope this works for claremorris but I wouldnt hold my breath.eircom E fibre rollout isnt going to the main street in our town as they arent upgrading the connections despite doing all the surrounding areas. So business isnt benefiting.

I’m not sure that you are correct, but equally I don’t have a statistic to compare. All I can say is that I struggle with 2Mb/s.
Would you please reference that stat you mentioned please.

A company I worked for in the 80s reckoned 4Mbs would always be enough for theie entire digital documentary needs.

Limerick, out by UL, had fibre 20 years ago.
Fibre to the home is a waste of money. Copper for the local loop offers more than enough bandwidth and would allow a large chunk of the half a million euro to be spent upgrading 2 or 3 additional villages.
Just to point out that 250Mbps=29.8MB/sec, not 31.25MB/sec
It must be almost 20 years since the MAN network was first announced. Politicians were spouting the same auld sh1te back the too about our digital age fiber optic infrastructure.There are almost 100 other towns around Ireland with the the same fiber infrastructure just waiting to be lit up. Great soundbites, but no commitment to do things right. Poor old Ireland.
