If you like salary hikes and promotions, you might like being a Chartered Accountant right now

Well, in Leinster, at least…

THINGS ARE GOING rather well for chartered accountants, according to a report released today by Ireland’s biggest accountancy body.

The Chartered Accountants Society of Leinster today released their annual salary survey, which shows wages are increasing, hiring is up, and more accountants are getting promotions.

The average salary for a chartered accountant in the province is now €89,042, as opposed to €87,500 last year, and six out of ten members have been given a salary increase of up to 25% in the last three years.

In a statement this afternoon, the society’s Chairperson Stephen O’Donnell was positively bullish about the health of the industry:

This year’s results are indicative of the value that Irish businesses are prepared to pay for the skills of our members.
It’s clear that the work of our members is recognised for the central role they play in many organisations, where their skills are in high demand.
For anyone considering a new career move in finance, the message from this report is that Chartered Accountancy remains the premium accountancy qualification in Ireland…

Some 43% of the Leinster Society’s 23,000 members reported getting a recent promotion, which is an increase from last year.

The average starting salary for a newly-qualified chartered accountant is now €49,784, while a Head of Finance can expect to make in or around €136,318 in 2014.

And with 93% of those surveyed saying they feel confident or very confident about their job security, basically things are, on average, going very well indeed for chartered accountants.

Why are people so envious, anyone can get the qualification.Go sit the exams and that kind of salary is there for you instead of moaning about it on this website. Hit the red button all you like folks but its not like its some kind of closed shop profession. Good luck to them.

If it wasn’t for real professions and engineers these bean counters would still be sitting in caves counting rocks. It shows how twisted the world economy has become.

Speaking of sitting in caves counting rocks, Tullow Oil & Gas plc, under the long-term leadership of an Irish Chartered Accountant, is making steady progress globally generating significant shareholder value for many small Irish investors.

Although the share price has fallen back considerably over the past six months, following disappointing news from recent O & G exploration sites, Tullow shares now offer value IMO, with its strong management team and geographically diversified portfolio of revenue producing assets.

Me thinks the “average” salary figures being quoted here are being severely distorted by the massive salaries of a minority of senior directors/partners/executives. There’s no way even 60% of Chaetered Accountants are making anyway near €85k+. The median would be a far more useful measurement than the average.

Also the disparities between Dublin salaries and say Munster salaries (which can be as much as 30%) are not alluded to at all.

A very misleading article as is currently presented in my view.

The article uses headline figures. A more complete set of data is available if you click the link in the article. It gives average earnings by year of qualification, and grade within practice, financial services and industry.

Sounds like a publicity piece to get people into accounting and feed to CAI coffers. I can tell you for a fact that starting salaries in the big 4 are no more than €24k and they are the highest paying.
