Caitríona Perry is RTÉ's new Washington correspondent

Perry, who has been working for RTÉ since 2007, will replace Richard Downes in the Washington post.

RTÉ has announced that Caitríona Perry will be the broadcaster’s new Washington correspondent.

Perry has worked as a journalist in RTÉ since 2007, reporting across both television and radio news. She was awarded the National Justice Media Award in 2012 for Best TV News for her coverage of the government’s handling of St Patrick’s Institution for juvenile offenders. She has also worked as a newscaster for RTÉ Radio 1, 2FM and Lyric FM.

She began her career at Newstalk and then moved to Today FM where she worked as the radio station’s courts correspondent before joining RTÉ.

The reporter also recently travelled to Australia to cover the sentence hearing of Adrian Bayley who was convicted of the rape and murder of Irish woman Jill Meagher.

Commenting today, Perry said she was “thrilled and utterly delighted” with the new position.

“The Washington Correspondent is such an important role, one I’ve wanted and worked towards for a long time,” she said.” “I just can’t wait to get started!”

The new Washington correspondent, who is replacing Richard Downes, will take up the post in the coming weeks.
