September car sales down 10pc on last year

Figures from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry portray a struggling industry, with sales down in seven of nine months.

THE NUMBER of cars sold by car dealerships in September was down by over 10 per cent on the previous year, according to new industry figures.

Data released by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry shows a total of 2,487 passenger cars being sold in September – down by over 10.1 per cent on the 2,767 sold in the equivalent month last year.

The figures mark the seventh time so far this year that the monthly car sales figures are down compared to the previous year. Only in January (1.4 per cent) and July (8.43 per cent) were sales up from 12 months ago.

Volkswagen is the country’s highest-selling make, selling 9,700 units so far this year, some ahead of Toyota with Ford back on 8,273. The Ford Focus is the highest-selling model of car in Ireland this year, at 3,591 units, ahead of the Nissan Qashqai (3,256) and the Volkswagen Golf (3,237).

Hyundai has seen the largest sales increase of the biggest-selling brands, with sales up by 27.32 per cent to exactly 5,000.

The SIMI figures also show a marked increase in the number of motorists opting for low-emissions cars; sales of cars in the A band now account for over half of all cars sold.

If there was a second hand car I really liked but the only thing stopping me from buying it was the fact it had a plate reg from a rival Gaa county…i would pay 100euro to have it re-registered in my beloved county…now theres a nice win win revenue generator!!!!!

    Wait! I have the solution!!

Why not change car registration formats to accommodate superstitious people! Eureka!

…seriously though…as noted above, this is just going to get worse until the government realise what the real world is actually like.

    Creamy
What an absurd comment. What could you possibly mean by such unadulterated garbage. The State has been bankrupt since 2008 and is currently spending billions more than it earns. If it were a Corporate entity of any type whatever it could have been closed down long ago. We limp on with the generosity of our European friends who continue to warn that such overspending has to stop but on these pages day after day we want more and more and more and the Government is traitorous and treacherous because they won’t slip into the ultimate insanity of default.
Of course the ensuing anarch would suit a particular Party as they have lived on the margins of our society for years like a wolf in sheepskin clothing. Their reality is for Ireland to be consigned to an existence like North Korea or Uruguay or perhaps Albania.
    And…………you want what………..a new Car?

The motor industry behaves like it is the only industry suffering at the moment. The government already helped this industry and it is of very little benefit to the Irish economy as most of the money on car sales goes abroad to the manufacturers. It seems this industry is annoyed that people aren’t saddling themselves with more debt… the neck of them

Serves them right, I have no sympathy for dealers. Every car I ever bought had faults that would not get fixed under so called “yes sir it comes with a warranty” Or get it serviced and pay full whack for half the job.
Customer comes last. Ha ha we got ur money, see ya!

Seems to be that the only ones who can afford to buy new cars are public sector,
Teachers and nurses and guards. Typical
