CALLER ID IS a handy feature to have on your phone, but while it’s great to know who exactly is calling you, you might not want to keep your number private for a short time (or indefinitely).
If you ever need to turn it off, all of the major phones support it. Here is how you can activate it for each one.
iOS
Go into Settings > Phone > Show my Caller ID and you can turn it off.
Android
Go into the phone app and tap the options icon at the top right-hand corner (the three dots). Go into settings and look for Additional Settings.
Here you will find the Caller ID option as well as the option to turn off call waiting.
Windows Phone
Go into the phone app and tap on more at the bottom right-hand corner. Tap on settings (if you’re not brought straight to phone options, look for a phone settings option and tap on that), and scroll down the menu.
You will see Show my Caller ID where you can choose to let everyone see your number, nobody, or just your contacts.

My policy is don’t answer the door if I’m expecting nobody and don’t answer those up their own arses blocked numbers
Many of the blocked numbers are people who got their free cordless phone at age seventy, and on which there seems to be no setting to turn off caller ID. As a result I have to answer every call in case it’s my mom.
Land lines don’t have a user option to block there number. The service provider controls whether your land line is blocked or not. Call them up to change it.
As far as I know you can diall 141 ahead of the number on a landline. It used to work anyway

True caller app blocks calls without ID, I never answer an unknown number.
The mind boggles why anyone would want to hide their caller ID, I for one I am set up to reject any withheld numbers automatically. Seems the only people who hide their ID are Banks, Debt collectors and telesales. Choosing to hide your ID speaks volumes on the type of person, organisation you are/represent. SILLY article.
Joseph Dempsey… where by you are correct. In some cases a hospital or public service may show as private number if calls a routed through a switchbord so that doctor calling with your results or information on a loved one (just to pick an extream example) may not reveal a number. Also if anyone knows what a landline is, it can also show as a private number if you are exdirectary.

calling from a landline just type 141 before the number to withhold your own number, and if you are ex-directory and wish to show your number just key in the same 141.

As does adding 5 after first three digits for example 087 5 0000000 if you would rather leave a message than talk to the person you’re calling.

that’s all very well. but there are many people like me who refuse to answer calls with the caller ID blocked. What are you trying to hide? Are you a nusence call?
