Almost 400 jobs to go at Bombardier in Belfast

The company is currently undergoing a global restructuring, in which 1,800 jobs are at risk.

ONE OF NORTHERN Ireland’s biggest employers, Bombardier, has announced almost 400 job cuts.

The company said in a statement that it is seeking up to 90 redundancies, while 300 contractors, temporary workers and members of the company’s ‘Complementary Labour Force’ “will be released”.

The Canadian-owned aerospace and transportation company employs more than 60,000 people worldwide.

The company is currently undergoing a global restructuring, in which 1,800 jobs are at risk.

“Over the past four years, we have increased our total workforce by over 1200, primarily through our Complementary Labour Force, but unfortunately we now need to reduce our workforce levels,” the company said

We deeply regret the impact this will have on those affected and their families.

“As a result of the restructuring, our Belfast site will now form part of the new Aerostructures and Engineering Services business segment, which will specialise in the design and development of complex composite and metallic structures, including wings, fuselages and engine nacelles.”

East Belfast MP Naomi Long said it was a significant blow to the local economy.

The fact the company is still committed to commencing 40 new apprenticeships next month, also indicates confidence in the longer-term about the company and its Northern Ireland base,” she said.

It’s a tough day for them, and their skills are quite unique, it’s not like there is another aircraft maker down the road or in the next town, hope that’s taken into consideration with the payoff and re skilling

This is awful. They are highly skilled. It is not as if there is another aircraft manufacturer just down the road. And i though Bombardier were doing well…..

Yes, because it reduces how much we can spend on cross-border shopping and weekend breaks.

Lots of jobs lost everyday in foreign countries… why are you so concerned with a part of the UK and their job losses when many in, let’s say Africa have never had the chance of a job or daily food for that matter…………

Brian Keelty aka another fool with a stupid comment. Do you know how many people over the years and hundreds of articles about Armagh, Down, Tyrone, Fermanagh, Derry and Antrim have spouted the same anti-Irish garbage that you just have? Too many to mention.

A significant number of people from the North are employed in the South and vice-versa. So yes, we in the North do care about career prospects in the South. Did you stop to think before you spouted that nonsense? Amadán.

There is a fascination in the Republic’s media on reporting job gains or losses in N.I.
Rte do it all the time. Like it makes a difference to our economy.
Don’t see it reciprocated in the Northern media.
