A GROUP OF BANKS has been granted a judgement of €164 million against the developer Seán Dunne over loans given to his companies to buy two hotels in Ballsbridge.

Dunne’s companies had taken out the loans to fund the purchase of the Jury’s Hotel in Ballsbridge, which was one of three bought by Dunne for €375 million in 2005, in one of the most high-profile property sales during the building boom.

Ulster Bank had lent €326 million to fund the purchase of the sites to DCD Builders Ltd, Dunne’s holding company for the project, with the now-defunct Icelandic bank Kaupthing offering a further £84.1 million, according to Wikileaks documents.

RTÉ reports that the action in the Commercial Court today was taken by Ulster Bank which was acting as a security trustee for the syndicate of lenders which had lent the cash to Dunne’s company.

The Irish Times adds that the action had followed a demand from Ulster Bank that DCD repay some €260 million, which when refused was followed by a demand that Dunne pay €163 million himself.

Dunne was not present in court for the hearing. His legal representatives consented to the judgment being issued against him.

Dunne had planned to convert the three Ballsbridge locations into a new complex featuring a 37-storey tower, but An Bord Pleanála refused planning permission in 2007. It approved a less ambitious development on the site late last year.

  • What a load of nonsense these personal guarantees were. Where was he ever going to get 400 million. Anglo started this trend and the rest followed like apes.

  • Sean Dunne us a bully as is his wife now called a developer in the US. Sad part about this whole saga is that the planners were warned and still granted permission – will they go to jail ? Will the lobbyists for Dunne go to Jail? Now the rest us us are being bullied into paying with added taxes and austerity for this gamble. I bet he is still living well with good food and a steady flow of fine wine.

  • The only sheep in this story are the Irish people who blindly and stupidly let one political clique take over the country without ever raising a squeak. I’m Irish, I love Ireland, and I blame us/me/you.

And if you owed a 100 or 2 on your esb bill they’d switch off your power.!
No justice, no accountability, no responsability in this country

    • Sorry for snapping at you a bit Finbar.
We all want the people responsible to pay, but more than that i want this country to recover and that will never happen with everyone blaming other people and talking every little bit of hope down, its a horrible circle and i’d let every one of them go free if it just ment things would improve, people would find work and companies like quantas and emerates airlines would stop making huge profits from flying our children abroad! its heartbreaking.
We need confidence, thats the most important part.
      Chin up!

    • Finbar, Quinn made a big mistake but he never intended for the bill to fall on the tax payer. Anglo hood winked him to prop up the bank and they have a lot to answer for also. Anglo should never have taken away Quinns businesses. If he had been let run them they might have some hope of getting repaid over time but now there being run into the ground from what I have heard.

  • A little late in the day to call in personal guarantees. How any bank could have accepted them for such amounts needs scrutiny.

  • Dunne and his wife, former Sindo hack, Gayle Killela were living it up at a luxurious Wedding reception hosted by Sean Quinn last weekend. They looked as though they hadn’t a care in the World and believe that they are untouchable.
