Argos creating 800 Irish jobs to cater for Christmas rush

The British-owned chain store is hiring seasonal staff at 41 shops around the country as it prepares for the holiday sales rush.

ARGOS HAS ANNOUNCED it is to create 800 temporary jobs in Ireland, beginning next month, as it hires staff to cater for the Christmas shopping rush.

The jobs will be created at each of the company’s 41 stores in the Republic, and forms part of the chain’s overall recruitment drive for 12,000 new staff across its operations in the UK and Ireland.

The company says some of its previous seasonal employees have gone onto secure permanent jobs at the retailer.

Argos managing director Terry Duddy said the company was a “fun, interesting and busy place to be over Christmas” and that the company was keen to find “passionate and enthusiastic staff” to join its ranks.

Application forms for the jobs can be collected at Argos stores, or from the Argos Careers website.

Argos’ owner Home Retail Group, which also owns the Homebase DIY chain, turned a profit of €300m last year – though that was a 10 per cent drop on 2009.

If I found it more expensive Id go to a different store in the REPUBLIC for the same or similar product or buy Dot.ie providing the business was addressed in the REPUBLIC. Helping not Hindering is the only way to create jobs and get our country ticking once again…

    Great news.

However before shopping there, check the ROI price against the coverted Belfast price (check their website), and then decide which store you will use (even including cost of fuel ! )

    Bertie,
Perhaps you are in a position tht getting the best value for you budget doesn’t matter.

If a family doesn’t have the income, then finding the best value for money is not a choice but a necessity.

The point that you clearly completely missed was that Argos seem able to sell their product 100km away at a significant discount to the price in the ROI.
Is this profit maximisation by Argos ( as per the Tesco Ireland model) or is their cost base so high that they need the extra margin to trade profitably.

I’ll leave you think about that one for a while..
