Apple are well known for placing their shops in the high-profile, high-traffic, and often iconic locations. Louvre, 5th Ave, Grand Central, Victoria Square… it’s a symbol (and financial sense)… I think its safe to say Dublin is the best bet here…

So what is the explaination for choosing cork? Seeing as their track record is as u stated!

I think it’s a shame they do European business from Ireland, without having a single store here.

Don’t think he said it didn’t revolved around Dublin. If he’s from Dublin why would he wish for a shop to open up in cork or Galway?

Why would they open an apple store here. The shops are just branding exercises. They shift their product through different channels and that is where Cork comes in. There is a strong coterie of tech companies that have strong sales teams, strong customer service bases. Why would they move to Dublin and pay all the extra costs and logistics problems associated with that.

Probably the ridiculously high rents Vs no one having /spending money equation that’s keeping them from opening in Dublin or anywhere in the south.

Cork is a sales and customer service centre. Hardly a sweatshop…

Id agree to an extent there. Lots of the jobs announced are in IT sector. Already we are seeing Nokia struggle as it can’t compete with Apple and Samsung. Apple is like Dell in Limerick. Still it is jobs for now and they are badly needed. Spinoff and construction jobs are badly needed. I just hope all this year’s announcements aren’t coming before we vote on the fiscal treaty.

The problem is that the only kind of jobs we are going to attract from overseas are for high value products. We cannot compete on labour costs for low or medium value products.

We are putting all our eggs in to a Multi-national basket .They are great to have but they are not the back bone of employment. Home grown SME’s provide over 90% of the jobs here, until they start to grow, Ireland will not recover. This is still obviously great to see and we should go with a spring in our step, and look to start our own little businesses. I have, start part time, make a few bob, then go full time. You can manage the risk, manage the exposure and you can make money working for yourself. Go get ‘em lads

Fair play fagan’s. I totally agree with you on your point about over reliance on multinationals. I think there is a feeling in Ireland of distrusting Irish people who start their own business, and a lack of self confidence about our abilities to do so. So its great so see people bucking the trend. I myself hope to set my own business soon, have a few ideas floating around that Im developing on the side, not yet sure which one to go with, or if I have found the right one yet!

Most Apple jobs are in manufacturing in China. But I’m not sure I understand your question.. Obviously all 500 jobs are applicable to Irish residents with the appropriate qualifications. Whether they’re Irish or not it’s 500 people off the unemployment register and onto the tax register.

Its 500 jobs…..and seeing as apple have been in cork 30 years and its their european headquarters i dont think the ida needed to incentivise them.

Kiki, IDA would not be incentivising a massive company that has already been here for decades. Your red thumbs are possibly for that false info, and the negativity.

This jobs announcement is a great reflection on the hard work of the staff there. Well done all in Apple, good work!

500 jobs at 25,000 each works out as 12.5 million a year into the irish economy, not to mention the fact that they are building a new building down there and the fact that many of the jobs are probably over 25k. Also if we say that the average unemployed person gets 6,000 a year (completely of the top of my head) thats a saving of 3 million a year to the government. So we are getting a benefit of 15.5 million.

No idea how much the IDA are giving them (if anything??) but over ten years they will be pumping over 125 million into the economy and we will be seeing a benefit of 155 million, so as long as its a good bit less than that leave em off…..
