Fewer iPad sales and older iPhone purchases mean Apple's earnings fall again

The results announced today mark the second straight quarter that Apple’s earnings have fallen from the previous year after a decade of steadily rising profits.

APPLE LATEST QUARTERLY report confirms the iPhone maker’s growth has stalled along with its pace of innovation.

The results announced today mark the second straight quarter that Apple’s earnings have fallen from the previous year after a decade of steadily rising profits.

Despite the ongoing erosion, Apple fared slightly better than analysts had anticipated. That helped lift Apple’s stock by $22.01 (€16.63), or more than 5 percent, to $441 (€333) in extended trading after the financial results came out.

The shares remain down by more than 35 percent since the latest model of the iPhone came out 10 months ago.

Apple’s revenue for the three months ending 29 June barely budged from last year. That’s the smallest revenue increase since the Cupertino, California company unleashed a mobile computing revolution with the iPhone’s debut six years ago.

Apple hasn’t released another breakthrough product since the iPad came out three years ago, raising concerns the company has lost its touch since the October 2011 death of founder Steve Jobs.

The company earned $6.9 billion (€5.2bn) in its fiscal third quarter, a 22 per cent drop. Revenue totalled $35.3 billion (€26.6 billion) versus $35 billion (€26.4billion) a year ago. Analysts had projected that revenue would be unchanged from a year ago.

As usual, Apple was propelled by its iPhone sales. The company sold 31.2 million units in the quarter, a 20 percent increase from the same time year ago.

But many people were evidently buying the earlier generations of the smartphone, which cost less than the latest model and generate smaller profit margins for the company.

The same phenomenon squeezed Apple’s profits with the iPad. To make matters worse, the company sold 14 percent fewer tablets — 14.6 million in the past quarter compared with 17 million a year ago.

I’m with Matt..had two iPhones (was blown away with the first iPhone when it came out way back…fantastic product for the time) and now an S3 and the difference in almost every way is night and day. The iPhone screen is terrible compared and the availability of apps is way less on the Apple.

Most iPhone users I know are simply stuck in the system and unwilling/unable to move onto the superior Android systems simply because they know and understand the iPhone. Brand loyalty and the fact that the iPhone is so easy to use (and reliable) means it keeps a very strong market share but for the more savvy user, the top of the range Android systems (Samsung, XTC and now the Sony and the Nexus) are just far superior products.

Had all iPhones except original iPhone, current is a 5. Nothing has ever wowed me enough on another phone or OS to make me want to move. Some slightly better access to controls on other OS’ which appears to be addressed in the next iOS, this will keep me with a simple familiar system which rarely failed me unlike many other electronics/software I’ve bought.

So much misinformation with that post! I will concede that Google Play has surpassed the App is quantity but it’s also responsible for over 80% of mobile malware (NDC) and a lot of decent devs are having their code pirated and resold hence the lack of actual quality apps. The only thing superior with the Samsung screens is the size (which is ridiculous, how many apps are actually optimised for that screen size-not a lot hence Samsungs recent news of dev conference) they are also stick stuck with inferior PenTile pixel layouts minimising clarity (not seen due to size) but is there. The S3 you speak of is already a generation behind – the S4 was released, keep up. But the S4 is nice, albeit with stock Android not Samsung’s thrown together POS. And here is something further Android is on thousands of devices from several hundred manufacturer make the case that it optimised for everything it’s on I dare you. Now look at iOS which is capable of being run on devices three years old! Over 70% of android devices are using SOFTWARE three years old!

I had to pay for the courier which annoyed a little given the problem was not of my own creation but the new one works perfectly. Haven’t owned a Samsung but they feel kind of cheap and plasticky by comparison with apple products.

@ciaran. Your summary of the iphone 5, is that before you switched it on ?!!.
Your forgetting a far more superior camera, faster Internet usage over wifi and 3G, faster data transfer between pc/mac and phone, 4g ready, double the ram eliminating any lag with backgrounding, higher resolution screen. As newer and more advance OS updates come out, older devices will struggle with it.

    Interesting:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-23431281

One telecoms consultant said the news highlighted the difficulty Google had in distributing changes to Android.

“When Google releases its updates, manufacturers want to check them and then network operators also want to certify the code as well,” said Ben Wood, director of research at CCS Insight.

“It’s a consequence of having so many different firms making Android devices, with most running their own user interfaces on top.

“By contrast, Apple just pushes its updates directly to consumers.”

I am firmly in the Apple camp when it comes to technology but I firmly believe they need to be cut down a peg or two and welcome this news. The restricting of all their technology to force you to buy all their stuff is beyond infuriating! As well as that when I bought my first Mac about 8 years ago their customer service was second to none, now you have to pay for some after care for certain things and when I tried to return a faulty product I bought on their site recently within 3 months they basically gave me the two fingers and gave me the number of the manufacturer in Japan and told me they are not taking it back! After getting too big for their own boots IMO! You need happy customers to have happy shareholders, that concept seems to be diminishing in Apple HQ!

They try and sell applecare which is a complete con in Ireland because the SOGASOS act already gives you better cover. Apple will try and tell you you only have one year warranty but if you fight them on it they will give and eventually give you your rights.

I’m in the android camp when it comes to phones but have a MacBook air because unfortunately none of the pc manufactures will make me a decent laptop.

    For me.

Widgets – couldn’t live without them, have my mails, messages, etc on the home screen.
Tasker – its awesome, can automate anything on your phone.
Gesture Typing – much easier than tap typing.
Customisation – Can change my launcher, lock screen and other stuff.
Proper Integration of Apps – can open different apps depending on what i click on, i.e. call abroad use Skype instead of the Phone itself.

Hardware wise I couldn’t live without the wireless charging the Nexus has, I always put my phone down in the same place(now on the charging plate), used to never remember to plug it in, great always having a full battery after work.

Also has NFC, if the banks ever get their ass properly in gear I can use it as my debit card(I live in UK and most places have nfc debit cards now).

James is right, it’s worth having android if for no other reason than using tasker … It really is incredible what that app can do.

Widgets are next in line, I would really struggle without that info on my home screen, I know that’s just what I have gotten used to but it really is very handy.

Next up is being able to play any video file, I would do a lot of commuting to work, so being able to download a TV series and just drop it onto the memory card is a must.

Then you have the usual customization, expandable memory etc

For me is not even the hardware as such, but what the phone allows you to do.

The other half has an iPhone 5, I went to set her Alarm one night and was amazed that you couldn’t turn off the vibrate feature on the alarm, without turning off vibrate on the phone altogether. Now that seems a pretty minor thing to be worrying about, but coming from using Android and what you can do with something like tasker.. I was very surprised?!

I’m worried about big screens and battery life. The battery on my last phone, the iPhone 4 seemed longer than the iPhone 4S and I hear the iPhone 5 is worse again, this is the biggest drawbacks to smartphones IMHO and it doesn’t seem to becoming addressed. God bless Nokia 3310, that was a camel in batteries.

Maybe ios7 will bring improvements but I think Apple will not make enough bold innovative moves to even get close to android.

WiFi direct. Like bluetooth on steroids.
    Default app choice.
Share to any app capable, not just Facebook and Twitter.
    Install apps from the Web.
    Wireless dlna.
App integration with the os. Like my podcast app will turn my WiFi on each morning download my podcasts then switch it off.
    Widgets.
There’s more. These are just the ones I use often. I’m not an apple hater just a fan of great software and hardware.

Tasker, home screen widgets – never found them useful to be honest
Customization – agree, but again not essential feature, nothing I would miss on my iPhone
Expandable memory – really always? every android phone has expandable memory? don’t think so
Changeable battery – really again? i.e. in HTC One too?
Expansive settings – agree, again, nothing that iPhone is lacking for me
Charging – oh wireless charging where you still have to put the thing on the yoke? massive feature lol :)
File compatibility – I haven’t come across file that my iPhone (armed with couple 3rd party apps too) couldn’t open.

What is also worth to notice, almost every apple system shortcoming or functionality you are coming across in daily use is compensated quickly by an app that can do it, usually free, sometimes you pay 2 or 3 quid.

I’m surprised that you haven’t found tasker useful… I think it’s unrivaled to be honest. I only use it for very simple tasks ie silencing phone and screen brightness at work, turning on wifi when I walk into my house, changing settings when opening an app… It makes life a lot easier.

Expandable memory and and exchangeable battery has been a feature on every android I have had, didn’t realise not every phone had that capability.

The charging options that I mentioned was more to do with compatibility with micro usb as opposed to limited to apple charger. Small plus but a plus all the same.

Enola you haven’t a clue man. Widgets and customisation is the main one. Coupled with the ability to use a standard mini usb charger so you can charge in a friends house even if they have a HTC etc these are the two main benefits. Also, Google Play is the way forward, so many companies running android the money is there for developers to properly develop android apps.

So em ye, talking out your hole as usual.

Byss: educate yourself bit more. Even if pixmania sells S4 under official RRP (please note not for 500 EUR though as you previously suggested but more!) – then you can find similar places selling iPhone under apple’s RRP too. You either compare 2 official sources / online shops, or either you find best price through 3rd party retailers for both. Do you understand now? You will probably find s4 cheaper than iPhone 5 not denying that, but difference wouldn’t be as much as 150 EUR or more as you suggested.

I think the next 12 months will tell a lot. Google are building an Apple killing platform with android that hasn’t really caught on yet this side of the Atlantic but is rapidly gaining momentum on the other side. I’ve been an Apple fanatic for the past decade or so but have more or less made the decision to switch as soon as I can afford it. I think Apples core is rotting with Steve Jobs, if ever there was an example of a company being one person then that was it. It happened again in the 80′s – Jobs went off to do his own thing and was then brought back to pull Apple back from the brink. He gave it a shot in the arm to make it what it has been since iPhone. But he’s gone and with it is gone Apples ability to wow the crowds. If you’ve got Apple stock, dump it now I say !

actually Apple is outselling Android in the US..
I have the iphone 5, apple ipad and the HTC one..both the ip5 and One are excellent phones and both have advantages and disadvantages.
At present Apple’s app store is ahead of Google Play in apps being developed and security.
Google really need to start checking apps more regularly and stop the malware spread across android.
Also the reason Companies develop for IOS first is because of so few devices. Its a killer developing an app that will work across hundreds of different devices and across multiple versions of android. Plus its a well know fact that Apple users spend more on apps than android. Significantly higher. Stll love my HTC one though and coming around to android.

@ James . thats incorrect. quite a tricky one is this, but will give it a go.
The OS only takes up approx 800mb of space, and is actually accounted for in the orange “other” space you see in itunes . The difference between what storage space the iPhone should be and what you actually get is down to how the gigabyte is measured. A GB is measured in binary and decimal standards, decimal measures a gigabyte at exactly 1000 mb = 1GB, binary measures a Gigabyte at 1024mb. While your iphone does have 16gb of decimal storage, the software uses the binary standard to measure it, thus leaving you with less than the 16 or 32gb you expect. To calculate the ‘useable’ or binary storage, divide 16gb ( 16.000.000.000 bytes ) by 1024 3 times , 16gb = 14.9, 32gb = 29.8gb.
This is just a marketing ploy all disk drive manufacturers have used for years to make drives seem larger than what they are. I doubt they are doing anything illegal though, just clever measuring and mathematical equations.

I find that hard to believe but don’t know anyone who has one so I can’t test your claim.

I’ll PM you my address and you can send me on Twitter free one for em, test purposes. Yes, that’ll do.

HTC One – I can agree with all you’ve said, but there is one quite important drawback with this phone, battery life. Not that it’s terribly bad, but nowhere near top in that category either.

I get 29 hours from my HTC One with 4.5 screen on time, on the grand scheme of things that’s pretty good

Not sure what you’re doing but I normally get 2 days or so out of my HTC One and I’d be a moderately heavy user! Definitely always over a day and a half anyway! Without doubt the best phone I’ve ever had, and I’ve had Nokia touch phones, apple and android!

Jonny: unfortunately what you’re getting out of your HTC One is irrelevant, as your usage pattern may be totally different than mine.
The only relevance in battery life you can get when tested under same stress in exactly same pattern.
And using such testing, HTC One does not come out very good, it’s OK, but far from top of the league.

Anyway use bit common sense, such awesome screen with that resolution and dpi + best speakers on the market cannot have no bad influence on the battery, can’t cheat physics mate.

I use iPad 2 and iPhone 4 simply because I find them easy to use I tried Samsung and found them to complicated for me. As for the other stuff you are all talking about. It sounds like Glingon to me.

I switched to iPhone a few months ago from Android, but not out of choice. My android died and I was given an iPhone 3GS for free. I HATE iTunes. I hate the fact that iPhones can’t be customised like androids. It also loses 3G signal several times an hour. I can’t complain really, since the phone was free, but when I can afford a new phone it will be back to android! iPhones feel like they’re for kids.

iPhone is still great all rounder, most android phones are just too large for comfortable use and in fairness their more advanced operating system is not really a plus, when iPhone is easier to use and has all features you need anyway. What is apple seem to lack though is little bit of change, for last couple of years they are selling basically same phone with slight improvements, they will need to create some totally new shape / specs to buy me into another one now. iPad however is still best tablet by far, while top android phones are arguably better than iPhone, then there is no better tablet than iPad that for sure, I’ve tested many…

“I’ve tested many” is not a quantifiable definition so how you expect it to puff up your argument I have no idea. I’ve never found the iPad to be anything spectacular or any tablet for that matter. For a few hundred my girlfriend got a laptop with a good processor and enough memory to wipe the floor with the most expensive iPad. The screen can be flipped over so it can be turned into a touchpad tablet or a keyboard laptop at any moment which makes it infinitely more useful for a competitive price.

@ James Culligan – you slag someone for not using quantifiable definition to put forward their argument then you proceed to use the vaguest terms possible to describe your girlfriends laptop(make?/model?) that you bought for a few hundred(how much exactly?) with a good processor(which processor?) and lots of memory(how much?) which ‘wipes the floor’ of the most expensive iPad! Forgive me if you were being sarcastic!!!

HTC one is by far the winner for me. I’ve had a Nokia touch phone, apple, Samsung and HTC. Android can be confusing at first but very simple to use once you get used to it. In a speed test recently the iPhone 5 came out as the slowest of the top ten smart phones (you’ll find an article on this here on the journal, on CNET and also Gizmodo).

In my opinion the HTC one is the best designed phone on the market, great battery life (for a smart phone 2 days is great), easy to use, great UI, audio quality is great (find me a phone with better external speakers, I dare you!) and a pretty decent camera. Also it’s been hailed globally as possibly the best phone ever made (again CNET, techradar, gizmodo). Samsung have failed by adding too many gimmicks to their phones, was very disappointed with the s4 (reviews have been good but Samsung only note worthy galaxy is the s2) and apple haven’t kept up at all and appear to be doing a Nokia.

Apple is the AOL of mobile phones. You’ll have fond memories of them in 5 years. Came out with the most innovative and amazing product that wrapped everything in a tight little package. But they are failing to keep up with the times and relying on brand loyality

Apple hasn’t had any real innovation in years and has fallen behind other companies. Without Steve Jobs at the helm, there probably isn’t much chance of things improving.

Companies that lead in their field are most often only there for a number of years then lose their edge. Remember that Xerox used to be the “only” company to get a copier from, Sony was “it” as far as electronics, Kodak was always ahead of the competition for cameras, Dell was the leading computer company, and Blackberry was the ONLY business phone anyone wanted. How are these companies doing today?

Too bad so many are stuck with their eco system and will have a hard time switching all their Apple-only compatible hardware to something more modern.

Speaking just about iPhone, since I have one – a lot of people are making the comment “i’m happy to stick with this phone forever” which just causes people to make snide remarks about functionality within a few years etc. However, what I really take this to mean is that people like their iPhone and when support is removed or functionality with new apps decreases, then they will look into upgrading, but not before. I have an iPhone 4, and I love it. When the time comes I intend to upgrade it to another iPhone – whichever one is newest at the time. But that will probably end up being the 6 (or 5s or whatever they call it), which means that Apple missed 2 generations of getting my money (4s, 5). The phones are being brought out too regularly, people aren’t bothered upgrading that frequently, especially since one of the things which inspires brand loyalty to apple is that functionally it doesn’t change that much, generation to generation.
